THE meat cabinets at the supermarket might be empty but butchers in Cairns report they have good levels of stock if you fancy a steak or something to throw on the barbecue or in a stir-fry for dinner.
Cairns Bulk Meats managing director John Edmonds confirmed that customers who may have once only bought their beef, chicken, lamb or pork from a supermarket have turned to his business behind the Stockland shopping centre at Ishmael Rd in Earlville, thanks to their consistent supply.
He said business had doubled since the pandemic and they had plenty of stock.
“We are definitely seeing more people who used to shop at supermarkets come to us,” Mr Edmonds said.
“Last week were not doing added value, we were too bust, but we have plenty now available.”
He said whole chicken was in high demand as it can be roasted for dinner, used in a stir-fry or in sandwiches the next day.
“A few people talk about the price of beef and how it’s getting dearer but with meatworks shut only the better quality is available,” he said.
