Brisbane floods: SES Far North region volunteers deployed to south east

Specially-trained Far Northern crews have been deployed to the state’s south east to assist with under-pressure services impacted by the widespread flooding.

SPECIALLY-TRAINED Far Northern State Emergency Service volunteers and staff have been deployed to the state’s south east flood crisis with more expected to head down throughout the week.

Queensland’s southeast communities including suburbs in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Gympie have been inundated with reports of hundreds of millimetres of rain per day with mass ongoing rescues, and on Sunday, a death count of six.

Naturally, it’s left local emergency services stretched with the SES network triggering a call to reel in personnel from across the state to assist crews already on ground.

From the SES Far Northern Region, acting area controller Matt Currey said 15 volunteers and two staff were deployed on Saturday, and further four volunteers were sent down on Sunday.

“It’s looking to be a prolonged event so we’re expecting to get the call to send more volunteers down,” Mr Currey said.

“We deployed crews that are multiskilled from storm damage, working with heights and flood boat operations.

“At this stage, we’re not sending down any equipment, it’s just themselves. They’re getting to Brisbane and then being sent out, we’ve had some go to the Caloundra area, and the (Brisbane) north coast area.”

Mr Currey said SES in the Far North collectively had about 700 personnel and those deployed to the south east were from across the region, not just Cairns.
