Spare a thought for tradies set to swelter on roofs this week amid an incoming heatwave expected to push the mercury past 40C in parts of the Far North.
In Cairns the mercury is forecast to peak on Monday and Tuesday at 34C before dropping to a maximum daytime temperature of 33C, where it will remain until Saturday.
Temperatures are tipped to easily surpass the November average of 30.09C.
With dark clouds looming on Sunday afternoon, sticky conditions had most hoping for an early wet season deluge after a very dry start to November.
And though thunderstorm warnings were issued for large swathes of the state, no significant falls were recorded in Cairns.
Late Sunday 15.6mm had collected in the gauge at the Cairns Airport, well below the November average of 90.4mm.
Heading into a new week Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Steven Hadley said the wet season build up would produce thunderstorms in the Atherton area, through to Ravenshoe and out west to Mount Surprise but not much rain was expected on the coast.
“You might see 50mm or more but I think it’s going to be much less than that, maybe 15-20mm around the Tablelands and a lot less on the coast,” he said.
On Sunday the BoM issued a three day heatwave warning for large parts of Queensland from Mackay to Cape York.
“Cairns is going to be hot and places like Laura on the sub-peninsula will crack 40 over the next few days,” Mr Hadley said.
Asked when this year’s wet would deliver proper rain, Mr Hadley said no significant weather systems had been detected.
“Looking at our climate outlook for December it’s a good chance of exceeding the average rainfall,” he said.
“In the next week we have a weak trough but no major weather systems coming.”
