Transport workers and employers call for reform

A young father is fighting for life after he was hit while riding an e-scooter to his construction job early on Monday morning.

Jayden Morton, 24, has been revealed as the young man critically injured in the serious crash between an Uber and an e-scooter at 5.30am in South Brisbane on Monday morning.

Mr Morton is in an induced coma with serious head injuries, broken bones and swelling on the brain.

A close friend said even if the young dad recovers they have been warned he will never be the same.

April Copeland said Mr Morton has been placed in an induced coma for seven to 10 days after his “body went into shock and [the hospital] had to up his dose of sedation due to brain swelling”.

“No matter what, if he makes it out of this he won’t be the same person anymore,” Ms Copeland said.

A spokeswoman from the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane’s south confirmed Mr Morton is in a “critical but stable condition in ICU”.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Mr Morton, describing him as “one of the nicest, kindest-souled people you could ever come across”.

“He was with his daughter the day before for Fathers Day, he is such a great father and financially supports her and her mother,” the GoFundMe says.

“Jay’s motivation in life is being the best father he can and providing for his beautiful 5 year old daughter Mercedes.”

The GoFundMe says doctors have not been able to check the full extent of Mr Morton’s injuries because of the stress to his body, with swelling and bleeding on the brain, two broken legs, and broken bones in his face, neck and spine.

Family and friends have remained at Mr Morton’s bedside since the crash.

“Everybody who loves him are praying that he wakes up from this coma. When he does things are going to be very different and hard for him for a long time,” the GoFundMe says.

Ms Copeland revealed Mr Morton, a former professional scooter rider, is a “fighter” who had also conquered the Kokoda Trail at just 13 years old.

“He started working as a trainee six months ago for Aus PT working with the CFMEU union, and has been doing his absolute best at work.

“Everyone is so proud of him and he has the support of every person in the union.”

Ms Copeland said Mr Morton had been working on construction of the Queens Wharf casino.

“That’s where he was on his way to the morning of the accident,” she said.

Another close friend, Nathan Cale, said Mr Morton had a “beautiful temperament” and that five-year-old Mercedes is his “world”.

“He’s a hardworking, generous and loving father,” he said.

“I just can’t wait to get him back here.”

Mr Morton was travelling along Melbourne Street when he collided with a rideshare car about 5.30am Monday morning.

The car driver was uninjured and police investigators are still determining the cause of the crash.

It is not believed Mr Morton was wearing a helmet.

The GoFundMe has been set up to help Mr Morton pay his rent and support his daughter Mercedes.

“Nobody is coping with this well, any bit of help will be greatly appreciated,” the GoFundMe says.
