Snail-paced Brisbane motorists have been slammed for driving at speeds of 10kmh under the limit with claims the practice is causing road rage to spiral out of control.

Debate has raged on a Reddit thread started by Brisbane user livecrappy who asked why people drive 10km/h under the speed limit.

“I find it absolutely infuriating to be stuck behind a car going significantly below the road’s speed limit in normal conditions,” the frustrated user said.

“I often ponder what the reasons for them doing this is. Do people not realise they are? Not care?

“Scared to go at the speed limit? Any insight Brisbane drivers?”

It follows a major spike in traffic-related fines, including $287 for going 1kmh over the limit.

Another user Beerio511 said roads near the Toowong cemetery were the “biggest sh*tfight.

“It makes me so f***ing angry every time I go up on it. It baffles me nothing is being done to improve it,” they said.

“I get stuck behind people doing 40kmh on the six-lane Kingsford Smith Drive because it’s scary and busy,” user notinferno commented.

Another user said braking on major arterials like the Bruce Highway and M1 was incredibly dangerous.

“Specifically, if you are in the motorway, stay the f*** away from the brake pedal,” user hU0N5000 said.

Reddit user azazeldeath commented that the 1kmh over fine led to people drivers travelling under the speed limit creating road rage among other motorists.

User Gwynnbleid95 argued there was too much road rage in Brisbane.

“The amount of people that tailgate even when you go the limit on a single lane road is crazy,” the user said.

“Not to mention the dangerous driving like break checking at high speeds or crossing onto oncoming traffic to take over the person in front of you.

“I think being calm behind the wheel is just as important as being a skilled driver.”

User Ready-Ad7260 also defended the driving behaviour.

“Slow down. Every km/h faster increases the risk of damage and death in a crash,” the user posted.

From July 1, red light, seatbelt and speeding fines increased in Queensland.

Fines for not wearing or incorrectly wearing a seatbelt jumped to $1078 and four demerit points.

Drivers disobeying traffic signals, including not stopping at yellow or red traffic lights and yellow or red bus and tram lights, increased to $575.

For speeding, the following penalties were introduced:

• 1-10km/hr above the limit: $287 and 1 demerit point

• 11-20km/hr above the limit: $431 and 3 demerit points

• 21-30km/hr above the limit: $646 and 4 demerit points

• 31-40km/hr above the limit: $1078 and 6 demerit points

• More than 40km/hr above the limit: $1653, 8 demerit points, and an automatic 6-month licence suspension
