It was a big year for new-car arrivals in 2023 but this year promises a bumper crop of new machines.
There is something for everyone, from affordable small hatchbacks to EVs, big four-wheel drives and family SUVs.
These are the most anticipated new cars of 2024.
MITSUBISHI TRITON
Utes have longer working lives than most cars and the current Mitsubishi Triton has been in service for close to 10 years. A new variant is due to arrive in the first few months of this year.
Headlining the changes are a gruntier 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine that makes 150kW and 470Nm, a jump of 15kW and 40Nm.
It can now tow 3500kg and its butch styling adds some on-road flair. The cabin also has plenty of tech and safety features.
Prices are on the increase too, jumping by $3250 to $9400 depending on the variant.
VW ID. 4
Volkswagen has been tardy in launching its electric cars in Australia but it’s about to hit the boost button in 2024.
The will be the first one to drop, along with its SUV-cum-coupe sibling, the ID.5.
Neither is likely to be cheap. Prices are likely to start at about $80,000 for the ID. 4 with its punchy 210kW/545Nm rear-mounted electric motor. A 77kWh battery can deliver a driving range up to 550km and it has a bulging list of standard equipment.
VW is also bringing the ID. Buzz, the electric successor to the Kombi van. The electric people mover brings head-turning looks, acres of interior space and a driving range of about 415km.
KIA EV5
Kia’s electric revolution will charge ahead the launch of the Kia EV5. The mid-size electric SUV brings chunky, squared off good looks and a long-range version that can travel up to 720km on a single charge. It’ll be packed with hi-tech features including multiple digital displays and lots of safety equipment.
The brand is also expected to bring a long-awaited hybrid version of its popular Sportage SUV to rival the benchmark Toyota RAV4.
MG3
Australia’s cheapest new car is due for a big refresh in 2024. Details are scarce but the new model is expected to have petrol and hybrid options and improved safety features.
The booming car maker will also bring in a new version of the mid-sized MG HS SUV and the Cyberster electric sports car. The boldly styled two-door convertible promises to have potent performance, with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
TOYOTA PRADO
It’s been more than a decade since the current Toyota Prado arrived and the new version will be tougher than ever.
It shares much of its mechanical underpinnings – and its rugged good looks – with the new LandCruiser.
It will be use the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and 48-volt mild hybrid set-up that is due to be fitted to the HiLux this year, matched to an eight-speed auto and four-wheel drive.
Toyota is also preparing to launch its first electric car, the bZ4X SUV.
HYUNDAI SANTA FE
The new Santa Fe is unlike any vehicle you’ve seen from Hyundai but Land Rover owners might like the boxy new look.
The striking looking seven-seat family SUV is due this year and dials up the luxury with a pimped out interior and giant 21-inch alloy wheels.
It’s bigger than before and it’ll be only available with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol hybrid and all-wheel drive at launch.
The high-performance electric Ioniq 5 N will also debut this year, along with the big Ioniq 7 electric family SUV.
FORD MUSTANG
The Blue Oval’s legendary muscle car is back for another ride. It will be the cheapest ticket into a V8 performance car, with prices starting at about $77,000 before on-road costs for the GT variant.
It remains rear-wheel drive and will be available with the choice of a manual or auto transmission.
The flagship Dark Horse variant adds extra performance parts.
Buyers can choose a cheaper version fitted with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine too.
Ford is also expected to launch an electric version of the Puma small SUV.
LEXUS LBX
Lexus is adding a baby SUV to its local line-up. Based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, it will be the brand’s most affordable model. It’ll be hybrid only and available in front- or all-wheel drive.
Lexus is also bringing a luxe version of the Toyota Prado, dubbed the GX. It’ll be just as capable off-road but with a more luxurious cabin.
GWM SHANHAI CANNON
Budget-focused brand GWM is planning on bringing its pimped out Shanhai Cannon ute to Australia. It’s slightly bigger than the likes of the Toyota HiLux and the brand’s current Ute but smaller than American-style pick-ups.
Details are scarce but in China it uses either a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine or a 2.4-litre turbodiesel motor.
The Tank 500, a cut-price rival to the Toyota Prado, is also expected to arrive.
MAZDA CX-80
The Japanese brand will continue its push into premium territory with the new CX-80 SUV. It hasn’t been revealed yet but is expected to be a seven-seat version of the recently launched CX-60 mid-size SUV.
The CX-80 is not a full-size SUV so the third row is likely to be reserved for part-time use and smaller children, in a similar vein to a Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.
It is expect to use the 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines found in the CX-60 and a plug-in hybrid version is also highly likely.
Mazda could also introduce the CX-70, a mid-sized premium five-seater SUV, into its local line-up.
