Young woman praised for ‘speaking the truth’ about Australia

A young woman has gone viral after she was quizzed about the history of our country, and left viewers blown away.

A young woman has blown her fellow Aussies away after sharing the “hard truths” about our country’s history in a video that has since gone viral.

The unidentified woman was quizzed on facts about her home country by a popular content creator Surgen TV after being stopped while walking down a London street.

While Surgen initially presented the young woman a series of “true or false” questions, most of which she nailed effortlessly, he then asked her to share “something most people don’t know about Australia” – and what she did next has left thousands stunned.

“We actually had a thing called the Great Emu War,” she begins in a clip shared on TikTok.

“It involved actual people in the army fighting against emus.

“It lasted about a month I think.”

She’s not wrong.

In 1932, soldiers armed with machine guns were deployed in Western Australia to battle huge flocks of the giant native birds in a bid to stop them destroying crops, The Guardian Australia reported last year.

The bird’s annual migration from the Outback to the country’s coast was interfering with the country’s then rapidly expanding wheat production.

Drastic measures were deployed to prevent the birds from ploughing through the farming, but the emus “prevailed with only light casualties”.

Instead of killing the birds, the government introduced what is now known as the State Barrier Fence in WA, a 1200km-long barrier designed to keep animals away from farmland – though it is considered highly controversial to this day by wildlife advocates who argue it’s “cruel”.

Despite leaving her British interviewer floored by her knowledge of a bird battle he’d never heard of – the young Aussie wasn’t done.

“The Indigenous population of Australia actually only makes up 3 per cent of the total population, that’s because of colonisation and ‘The Stolen Generation’,” she shared.

She went on to explain to Surgen it referred to a period in Australian history where Aboriginal children were removed from their families through government policies.

“British and European colonisers wanted to ‘breed out’ the Indigenous culture, and basically would start trying to make mixed-race babies so they could eventually wean out the Indigenous population,” she explained.

“It was a very cruel time in Australia, a very bad part of our history.”

Once again, she was “spot on” in how she described the shameful historic event, which occurred between 1910 and the 1970s, and also affected Torres Strait Islander families.

As a result, many were quick to praise the young lady.

Many First Nations people led the way, applauding the young Aussie for “talking about our history in such a respectful way and with a caring tone”.

“Indigenous Australian here, we love sis and appreciate her and her voice,” one commented.

“Well done. For speaking the truth,” another shared.

As one wrote: “Slay. Using her voice right.”

Plenty more were equally as impressed to hear “straight facts” being shared.

“I can’t completely describe how relieved I am to hear this nuanced response from a young Australian,” said one.

“Well said young lady, well put ... you make me proud to be an Australian,” added another.

“We love an educated girly,” mused someone else, while one more said she was “Making Australia proud”.

Others were blown away by how “articulate” she was, as some Aussies admitted they’d never heard of the Emu War.

“Pretty and smart,” said one.

“She’s beautiful, smart, and respectful,” agreed another.

“Am I the only one who just got schooled on the Emu War,” asked someone else.

The video has clocked up almost 550,000 views since it was shared Saturday and amassed almost 60,000 ‘likes’.
