The humble Tim Tam biscuit is one of Australia’s most beloved delicacies – but as cost of living pressures continue to mount, some feel the treat is now “too expensive”.
Those struggling to justify the $5 price tag at Coles and Woolworths may be excited to discover Aldi has a “dupe” that some argue gives Arnott’s a run for its money.
The product in question is the Just Divine Milk Chocolate Biscuits, made by the Belmont Biscuit Co, which are priced at just $2.19 and contain 11 biscuits, equivalent to the amount in a packet of Tim Tams.
And they’re proving so popular a string of social media posts have popped up recently, raving about the affordable chocolate snack.
“Whoever likes Tim Tams, buy the Aldi version. They are heaps better,” one fan said in the Aldi Mums Facebook group.
Of course, the post quickly attracted a lot of attention, with many weighing in on the claims the budget item was “better”.
There were many firmly in support of the “dupe”, with some even claiming their kids were bigger fans of Aldi’s offering than the Arnott’s version.
“Yeah, I love them more, too,” agreed one.
“My kids refuse the Arnott’s ones now they have tried the Aldi one,” revealed another.
As one shared: “100 per cent agree! Same as the Aldi brand mint slice,” a third wrote.
“We like them more, too,” a fourth chimed in.
“My partner literally just finished a whole packet in one sitting as I was reading this. They are very nice,” another person admitted.
However, some loyal Tim Tam fans came to the defence of the cult-Aussie brand, stating the only version to buy is the original.
“Each to their own but Arnott’s Tim Tams are 100 per cent better – they are good for a cheap chocolate fix.”
“I’m sorry, but that’s a straight-up lie, haha. No one thinks that, for real,” said a second. “I love a lot of Aldi dupes but these ‘Tim Tams’ aren’t it at all.”
“No way, nothing compares to proper Tim Tams,” yet another person said.
“I’ve very faithful to the original,” someone else revealed, “you can’t beat them.”
Others pointed out the Aldi “dupe” only comes in one variety, whereas Arnott’s has a multitude of different flavours, including Caramel, White Chocolate and everyone’s favourite Double Coated.
‘I’m obsessed, but so expensive’
Meanwhile, an Italian expat living in Australia said she was “obsessed” with our famous biscuit but found them “so expensive” while travelling the country on a budget.
“So I’ve been to Aldi looking for a solution,” Veronica, who posts under the handle @theramblermonkey on TikTok, said.
“From the box, they look exactly the same... I cannot see the difference [once opened].
“I love the Just Divine version.”
It’s not the first time the biscuit has captured attention for its likeness to the Tim Tam, with consumer watchdog Choice comparing the two back in 2019.
In total, 75 staff took part in the blind taste test, with Arnott’s being crowned the superior biscuit with 61 per cent of the votes.
‘Shrinkflation’ claims rock Tim Tam fans
The popular snack was recently the subject of claims it had become a victim of “shrinkflation” after a shopper went viral for alleging fewer biscuits were now in the packet than average.
Amanda Catalano shared a video showing a packet of the Tim Tam Deluxe Cafe Latte biscuits, stating she was sure there were fewer biscuits inside than she remembered.
Showing a snippet from the famous 90s commercial starring Cate Blanchett, Ms Catalano showed the inside of the packet.
“This is what I’ve always remembered. Stacked side-by-side, no gaps in the middle. There is 11 biscuits,” she said.
She then compared it to the new Deluxe edition, which only launched at the end of last month, saying the biscuits were “spread out”.
“Look at that, there are eight! Three biscuits missing,” she declared.
“Like what is that space in between? That’s ridiculous.”
But Arnott’s told news.com.au Ms Catalano had made a mistake due to the fact she’d purchased a “deluxe” variety of the biscuits.
“Tim Tam has not changed the size of our existing products in recent years,” the spokesperson said.
“Tim Tam Original, with its undeniable flavours of smooth chocolate, tasty biscuit crunch and a luscious velvety centre, continues to have 11 biscuits in a pack.
“This has not changed in decades, being the same number seen in the 1994 advertisement with Australian actress, Cate Blanchett.
“Our most indulgent range, Tim Tam Deluxe, launched in 2022 and contains 8 biscuits.
“Each Tim Tam Deluxe biscuit weighs 20 per cent more than a Tim Tam Original biscuit, containing not only more chocolate per biscuit but also an extra gooey centre.
“To avoid any confusion, the gram size and biscuit amount are clearly displayed on the front of all packs.”
