Here’s what you need to know about the large-framed contraption you’ve probably seen in the corner of your favourite Pilates studio.

It might be the understatement of the century to say we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a Pilates workout in Australia.

Most studios offering the practice boast a diverse timetable of class styles, class times and instructors, making it one of the most customisable workout styles out there. From heartrate-pushing Reformer sessions to prenatal-friendly Mat classes, there’s something for everyone – regardless of experience level, age or physical capability.

But one up-and-coming style you may not be totally familiar with is beginning to pop up in Aussie studios, introducing a new style of toning, stretching and burning to Pilates lovers. Here’s what you need to know about Cadillac Pilates.

What is Cadillac Pilates?

Whether you’ve spotted one of these large-framed contraptions in the corner of your local Pilates studio (they’re pretty hard to miss), or are vaguely familiar with the Cadillac workout style courtesy of Kourtney Kardashian’s morning routine, there’s no ignoring the rising popularity of the Pilates workout.

Not to be mistaken for a Medieval torture device at first glance, the pieces of equipment used in this popular practice are known as Pilates Cadillacs.

Composed of a stationary table with a trapeze-style frame on top, Pilates Cadillacs are spring-loaded and come with stationary attachments to enhance a versatile range of movements.

At its core (excuse the pun) a Pilates Cadillac promotes constant core mobility and engagement with the use of gravity.

What are the benefits of Cadillac Pilates?

A Pilates Cadillac, much like every form of Pilates, facilitates an entirely customisable workout. While it can certainly be used to generate a full-body burn, the stationary design of the equipment is largely recommended for people who require a bit more support throughout their workout.

Despite looking like the most complicated of all Pilates classes, Cadillac Pilates is in fact considered to be the best entry-level movement style.

The contraception’s wide and stationary base makes it a great option for people not yet ready to tackle the instability and tension provided by a traditional Reformer machine. The raised bed is also an ideal alternative for those who may lack the mobility to easily get up and down from the floor in a Mat Pilates class.

Pilates Cadillacs make Pilates accessible to a wider range of people, especially those who are elderly, pregnant, recovering from an injury or anyone who has limited mobility.

What is the difference between Cadillac Pilates and Reformer Pilates?

While Reformer and Cadillac machines are both incredibly versatile and customisable pieces of equipment, they are each designed to accommodate different workout goals and capabilities.

Cadillacs are more commonly used for rehabilitative work given their ability to provide mobility support and are recommended for people who have never tried any form of Pilates. That being said, the added level of support also allows the machine to offer deep, targeted stretching exercises for more advanced Pilates clients.

Reformers on the other hand are a more popular machine among those looking for a challenging full-body workout. The customisable springs and attachments allow the body to be fully engaged while also challenging one’s stability, so many reformer classes are recommended for people with previous experience.
