When it comes to washing clothes, I have a pretty standard approach.

Put everything in the machine and hope for the best.

I know this isn’t the right idea, but when you’re washing what seems like 387 items of baby clothing a day mixed with business shirts, gym clothes and whatever else, it works for me.

iPhone to the rescue

I also haven’t studied up on the washing instruction hieroglyphics that you find on the inner tag of your clothing, which seem overly complicated.

Does anyone really have time to decipher if you should wash in hot or cold, tumble dry or line dry, communicated by microscopic icons I’m certain less than 1% of the population understands.

But a recent TikTok video has blown my mind, sharing an iPhone feature I had no idea existed.

The video by wtfaleisa starts by informing viewers that this new feature isn’t an app but a standard inclusion with the iPhone.

She then goes on to explain how to decode your clothing tags in a few simple steps.

First, open your iPhone camera and take a picture of the icons on your clothing tag. After capturing the image, tap on the image in the bottom left and then the icon of the ‘i’ in a circle next to the delete bin icon. You’ll notice a 'Look up laundry care' option; voila, the Da Vinci Code of laundry icons has been solved!

Just shoot and snap and the icons are decoded before your eyes.

The video has been liked over 300k times, and the comments are littered with comments praising the discovery.

“You learn something every day,” shared one viewer.

“WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!” demanded another.

When we put it to the test IRL, we were pleasantly surprised to find it worked.

“Seriously, so cool, I was I knew this sooner!” said mum of one, Isabelle.

"I'm always so unsure how to wash my clothes, and the care tags aren't ever much help. First, the text is soooo small, and second, who the heck actually knows what any of the icons stand for? This hack is an absolute game-changer and will prevent many shrunken undies," shared Sydneyside Eleanor.

It doesn’t stop there

The comments also advised of the many other things your iPhone camera can do.

Going through my photos, I could identify the breed of my dog, some flowers I saw on the street, and where to find recipes for a spread of food I took a photo of.

Whether you’ve known this for years or discovered it for the first time, technology really is a pretty cool thing.

But if I’m being completely honest, I’ll still be throwing all my laundry in the machine, adding detergent, running on cold water and hoping for the best!
