THE BEST NEW RESTAURANT
Arc Dining
There’s a new greenhouse-like building on the banks of the Brisbane River this year and it’s cultivating an innovative addition to Brisbane’s restaurant scene. Arc, with its quasi-horticultural architecture, a giant potted fig as its centrepiece and a gabled glass front wall facing the river to capture stunning Story Bridge and City views, is making its presence felt in the booming Howard Smith Wharves precinct.

THE BEST ON SUNDAYS
Hellenika
If the sign of a successful restaurant is planning your next return before you even leave, Hellenika at The Calile is unquestionably a star. Boasting a warmth, generosity of spirit and generally upbeat vibe within its white-bricked walls, diners are welcomed in like family by a team of pink-jacketed, buoyant, knowledgeable staff, who charismatically balance personality with professionalism.

THE BEST ITALIAN
Otto
The twinkle of the Story Bridge lights visible through floor-to-ceiling windows and garlicky wafts from the open kitchen are enough to lure you into up-market Italian Otto. But it’s the charming, measured and knowledgeable service, smart yet relaxed vibe and the promise of just one more glass of wine from the award-winning, European-influenced list that will have you staying far longer than you ever intended.

THE BEST FRENCH
Montrachet
Steak frites, French onion soup, double-baked crab and gruyere souffle and bouillabaisse mark out classic territory on the menu at this bastion of the King St food precinct in inner Brisbane’s Bowen Hills. Less classic but equally accomplished, slow-roasted duck with braised quince and parsnip gratin or maybe venison fillet with salt-baked beetroot and pickled red berries also demand attention.

THE BEST ASIAN
Donna Chang
While the beautifully appointed dining room in a heritage-listed, reincarnated 1920s bank might be the initial lure, it’s the Chinese food cleverly forged from Queensland produce with an innovative use of native ingredients that has diners coming back. The global list of more than 100 wines is white-focused, and there are more than 20 choices by the glass, as well as a menu of eight teas.

THE BEST TABLE WITH A VIEW
The Tropic
Right on the beach at Burleigh Heads in the freshly revamped Burleigh Pavilion, The Tropic boasts a jaw-dropping view past surfers to the saw-toothed Surfers Paradise skyline. On a blue-sky day with the waves providing the soundtrack, it’s hard to imagine a better lunch spot than here.

THE BEST FOR DATE NIGHT
Persone
Classical Italian dishes and smooth service remain hallmarks of the newest restaurant from the Gambaro family, who also run Gambaro Seafood and the Black Hide steakhouses in Petrie Terrace and at the Treasury casino. Opening last year in Brisbane Quarter, with views across the freeway to South Bank, this restaurant pays homage to the family’s heritage.

THE BEST DESSERTS
Nu Nu
Staring out across the Pacific from the umbrella-topped deck, the ocean breeze keeping the air cool against the North Queensland sun, there’s a magic to Nu Nu.
Let the friendly, if slightly inexperienced staff talk you into dessert, with the most moist lemon semolina cake joined by condensed milk ice cream, crunchy honeycomb and yoghurt jelly, simply sensational.

THE BEST SERVICE
Little Valley
Little Valley’s greatest strength remains its service thanks to warm and charming waitstaff who deliver knowledge and personality in perfect balance to ensure diners walk out with full bellies and happy hearts.

THE BEST WINE LIST
Signature
Like one of the premium bottles of champagne in Signature’s monumental 6000-bottle cellar, there’s a luxury and effervescence to this hotel restaurant.
Though it boasts all the hallmarks of a fine diner, it refuses to call itself one, trying to remain approachable. The extensive array of wine from the cellar is affordable, unless of course you’re talking some of the big ticket items like a 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal or magnum of 2009 Penfolds Grange.

THE BEST VEGETARIAN
Detour
The industrial chic interior in this historic building in the quiet, cul-de-sac neck of Logan Road is a fitting backdrop to food that is rustic but a bit edgy, and best shared.
From the “herbivore” half of the menu, the smoked pumpkin is as close to perfect as this gourd gets. Generous chunks of soft pumpkin are dusted with crushed pepitas and dotted with maple honeycomb. Roasted cauliflower is resplendent in a rich cashew curry with lentils.

THE BEST FAMILY FRIENDLY
Rice Boi
For the owners of this pumping, graffiti-clad, casual pan-Asian eatery, flavour is everything. That’s why their business model sees guests order at the counter and collect their own water so the savings can be put into creating the most delicious food possible. While the service may be minimal, it’s fast and friendly, making this a budget-friendly dining destination locals rightfully queue for.

THE BEST VALUE
Happy Boy
Forget sweet and sour pork or beef and black bean, it’s all about authentic, regional Chinese cuisine at this buzzing, brash and lively eatery, just outside the hubbub of Fortitude Valley.
Portions are beyond generous and prices are cheap, making this a terrific spot for groups on a budget.
