WHILE the beautifully appointed dining room in a heritage-listed, reincarnated 1920s bank might be the initial lure, it’s the Chinese food cleverly forged from Queensland produce with an innovative use of native ingredients that has diners coming back.
Start with silken scallop and prawn wontons bathing in a pond of aged black vinegar, coriander and chilli oil before perhaps enjoying char siu roasted pork neck given a local flavour with the addition of honey, rockmelon and tamari.
Otherwise, there’s a strong array of seafood dishes, including Queensland grouper roasted in paperbark and wood-roasted Moreton Bay bugs, or mud crabs and lobsters from the tanks at the back of the room.
Service is smart as diners perch on the plush pink and mint green upholstery and take in the chandeliers dangling from the ornate plasterwork ceiling.
The global list of more than 100 wines is white-focused, and there are more than 20 choices by the glass, as well as a menu of eight teas.
