Jett Kenny on the $200 tracksuit every bloke needs

He’s a male model with a great sense of style. But Jett Kenny has revealed the surprisingly simple secret to his fashion success.

Olympic protégé Jett Kenny is first to take on tonight’s Ninja Warrior

He’s the chiseled blonde tipped to be the next Bachelor, can hot shoe shuffle and get his clothes on and off in seconds, but model Jett Kenny is just an “average guy” at heart. When it comes to his wardrobe, the son of former professional athletes Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny likes to keep his colour palette neutral, buys his favourite ruggers at Lowes - and isn’t afraid to ‘Marie Kondo’ it up.

Inside the A-list power ladies’ lunch of the season

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m very basic; there’s lots of black, white and grey. If I’m going to the races I’ll spruce it up a little more and add a touch of colour here and there, but nothing too extravagant. Nothing beats black jeans, a black t-shirt and black boots.

How and when did you become interested in fashion?

I definitely say it came when I started modeling. Before that, I remember going to Hawaii on a family holiday years and years ago and I had this one pair of soccer shorts and a t-shirt and I wore it everywhere. It was always soccer shorts, a t-shirt and thongs. I definitely have a bit more of an understanding of fashion now, but I still only get dressed up when I have to.

What was your first ‘fashion’ buy?

I was given my first gift card for Zara, maybe back in 2016, and I didn’t even know they did mens fashion. I thought I could get something for my sisters but I ended up getting a black coat and it’s been my go-to and I still wear it if I’m going to an event or somewhere cold. It’s also the piece that’s been in my wardrobe the longest but that’s probably because nothing else still fits me.

What five things can’t you live without?

A comfortable pair of everyday shorts, especially on the Sunshine Coast because it’s short weather most of the year. A good tracksuit for winter; it never really gets that cold that we have to layer up too drastically. Thongs and a pair of Vans sneakers. And outside of that, sport and my Playstation.

What’s the favourite piece in your wardrobe right now?

Barney Cools has a whole lot of cool tracksuit sets ($99.95 per piece) that they just released. I bought a forest green one and the black set, but they’ve sold out so I’m waiting for them to get more sizes back because I’m going to get the grey set as well because they’re super comfy and I’m all about comfort.

What was your first big splurge item?

I don’t really lash out too much. Most of my shorts come from Lowes because I wear black ruggers most of the time, and I used to shop at Rivers.

What are your favourite brands?

At the moment, MJ Bale and Barney Cools.

Are there any cringeworthy outfits or trends you’ve embraced in the past?

There’s a photo of myself and a friend from school, we were probably in grade one or two, and I was wearing lime green cargo shorts and a fluro yellow t-shirt, and I’m pretty sure I also had an orange set. It makes me question what my mum was thinking at the time. Those were the colours and trends back then but nowadays kids seem a bit luckier. When I have kids, I don’t think I’ll be dressing them in lime green and orange, they’ll be getting more neutral tones.

Do you have any sentimental items?

Not really to be honest. I had a drawer full of representative gear from soccer and surf life saving, but I threw it all out the other day. Every time I cleaned out my wardrobe I’d think about doing it, but then keep it and it’s just been sitting in the same drawer collecting dust. I almost went to the extent of throwing out my entire wardrobe and starting again.
