The surf crashes just metres from the front table at this long-time beachside favourite on prime real estate in Noosa Heads. The view through pandanus and palms is so enticing that it is difficult to focus on the breakfast menu which runs from “something light” (almond oat and quinoa granola with acai berry sorbet, pictured) to “set for the day” heftier creations, bolstered by a specials board. Get set for a day’s surfing with a cauliflower pea and ricotta cake topped with two poached eggs with field mushrooms on the side. Or try the Tassie smoked salmon, with egg remoulade and a salad of shaved fennel, edamame beans and pickled zucchini. On a Sunday morning, there’s a queue of people waiting on lounges near the front door. The coffee is Segafredo and there are eight fruit smoothies plus fruit juices.

The cafe and bakery has a cult following on the Sunshine Coast for its sourdough sandwiches, generously stuffed with fillings such as house-roasted beef, onion marmalade or mild Italian salami, avocado, tomato and greens. Friendly and efficient staff handle the weekend rush with surprising ease. The all-day breakfast and lunch menus feature inventive gluten free waffles in sweet (ginger bread with poached pear, pictured) and a savoury (sweet potato with zucchini, bacon, feta and a poached egg). A house favourite is the green pea, feta and mint corn fritters which have a satisfyingly high veg-to-batter ratio. Loaves of sourdough as well as house-made pickles and preserves are sold on site and Harvest cater events. This is a gourmet take on home-style, healthy cooking.

With its white brick walls and Scandi-style decor, Little May is a rare find among the tourist-trap faux British cafes in the scenic hinterland town. The focus is local and organic and staff are warm and know their stuff. There’s popular items such as granola, bacon and egg roll, as well as healthy choices in the spiced chickpea and buckwheat bowl and the house smoked ocean trout (pictured) with its mixed lettuce, shavings of pickled fennel, cubes of potato, egg and baby capers. There’s fruit-packed, dairy-free smoothies and for coffee, a mild bespoke blend from Bear Bones Specialty Coffee in Fortitude Valley. Delicate house-made treats include the mini lemon tart with its lightly whipped curd and fine shards of meringue. It’s small enough to eat in one bite and like the food at Little May, too good to share

Focusing on quality, ethically derived produce from nearby farmers and growers, The Shak Organic Cafe’s dishes are all about respecting the ingredients, and combining classic fare with contemporary, creative twists. Take its version of a big breakfast — The Hunter — with a whole field mushroom, spinach, slow-cooked venison, butterflied duck and maple chipolatas, smoky bacon, herb-tipped grilled tomato, dukkah, poached free-range eggs and toasted ciabatta (pictured). Coffee is from Diddillibah and is served with organic dairy milk or house-made coconut, almond or cashew milk. There’s also a range of Fairtrade organic tea, cold press juice, smoothies, milkshakes and a standout, vibrant, house-brewed kombucha. With efficient service, this relaxed indoor-outdoor cafe on the Sunshine Coast delivers on all fronts.

Winnie is the newest sibling of Mudjimba’s popular Little Boat. Winnie has just a handful of tables and a tiny kitchen that punches well above its size. The Bali-style decor matches an Asian influenced menu, with dishes such as the Japanese cabbage pancake which comes with a fried egg, pork jowl, and condiments of sauerkraut, creamy mayonnaise, coriander and chilli. The black sticky rice pudding (pictured) doesn’t over-do the sweetness and arrives with caramelised banana and mild labneh. More conventional options include a 12-hour slow roasted brisket burger and the brekkie brioche burger. Smoothies range from the healthy berry with pineapple and a mild punch of cayenne pepper, to the rich banoffee smoothie. Strong coffee comes from coast roaster Vintage Black.
