TikToker's shocking discovery after cutting into a microwaved egg

If you're looking to reheat your hard-boiled eggs when it comes time to eat them, don't.
Just eat them cold like a normal person, but whatever you do - DO NOT microwave them.
Because that's exactly what Raegan Smith did recently and it did not go well, to put it gently.
Thankfully, she documented the whole thing on TikTok so we could learn from her mistakes...

She tried to reheat hard-boiled eggs in the microwave
Posting to her account, @smithraegan, Raegan captioned the clip, which has 22 million views: "Just typical teenage girly things."
In the video, Raegan has set her phone up on her kitchen bench and positioned it in front of a plate with a hard-boiled egg on it.
She looks at the egg sceptically, then slowly cuts into it with a butter knife.
KABOOM!
There's a massive explosion and the egg is sent flying everywhere.
Raegan jolts back in shock and ducks for cover.
The egg is left totally obliterated and a huge cloud of steam comes off the plate.
So what on earth happened?
Apparently, while eggs can be hard-boiled and cooked in the microwave, they can explode when reheating them due to multiple small pockets of 'superheated water' which 'spontaneously boil' and explode when exposed to air when cut open.

"It was an eggsplosion"
The comment section was equally in shock, both over the explosion but also why she did it and filmed it in the first place.
"Ok firstly, what the hell was that. But secondly, why the hell did you try this?" one person remarked.
Another chimed in, saying, "I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS."
"Eggcuse me, I didn't know eggs do that," another user joked.
Then another pointed out, "Good luck trying to get that smell out of your kitchen and ceiling."
While this user added, "It was an eggsplosion."
A dangerous viral trend
If you watch Raegan's video closely, you can see that she stands far away from the egg when she cuts it, as though she knows what is about to happen.
That's because she probably knew it would explode, thanks to a wider trend of people doing the same thing.
The viral phenomenon was kicked off by a video shared by user @cristinamilicua.
Cristina says in the clip, which now has over 19.5 million views: "This is a PSA to never microwave your hard-boiled eggs."
She then cuts to a video of herself covered in egg, before showing the failed food hack where the egg pops right into her face like a bottle of champagne.
And while she appeared to be safe and unharmed, people warned that it could have potentially been dangerous if a piece had flown into her eye.
Some even claimed they knew of people who "needed surgery" after hot egg yolk landed in their eye and strongly urged against people trying the trend.
And someone else said, "I bit into an egg fresh out of the microwave when I was a kid. Third degree in my mouth and face."
