All the way from the United States, Martha King has wowed crowds at the Ekka with her amazing woodchopping skills taking on the men and beating those who are “a bit more built” than she is.
The 175cm, 61kg rocket has competed in several competitions at the Ekka this week and won five already while also progressing into some finals.
Also competing is 195cm, Jack Jordan, who has come from New Zealand.
He has come first in a couple competitions so far.
Ms King from Pennsylvania in the US came to Brisbane to specifically compete at the Ekka.
“I’ve never been to Brisbane before, never been to the Ekka but they had a lot of Australian titles on for the woman and I came here to test my mettle,” she said.
“It’s been wonderful, everyone’s been really awesome. It’s great to compete in front of the crowd they’ve been cheering wonderfully.
Ms King has been competing for ten years and got involved as she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps.
“I love how strong I feel doing it. I love all the time and effort putting in. It’s a really excellent platform to encourage and inspire a lot of people,” she said.
“I think a lot of people are impressed to see the harder you work, the more your capable of and they believe in themselves more when they see me out there winning, beating people who are a bit more built than I am.
Mr Jordan started competing years ago after he watched his brother Shane do it when he was in high school and he eventually followed in his footsteps.
One of the competitions he looks forward to is the Ekka which he has been competing in for years now as there is a great Australia vs New Zealand competitiveness.
“I just love competing against the best in the world,” he said.
“When you are going there’s no better feeling.”
“You can only focus on the log in front of you. You can’t focus on the crowd in front of you but it certainly helps.”
