The last time we spoke, I shared with you how I’d found peace – and wow, did it resonate! Thank you for all the incredible messages. This time, however, I’m less likely to find as many who can relate. That’s because, as I write this at home, I am unable to leave these four walls because my face isn’t fit for public consumption – and it’s all my fault.

No, I didn’t have an allergic reaction to exotic seafood or succumb to late-onset chicken pox – though I imagine I might yet experience both at some stage.

However, I did permit a doctor to inject my face and chest with salmon sperm.

Allow me to repeat that so you don’t have to retrace your steps and reread: yes, a qualified, currently registered, practising medical officer injected my face with the sperm of a salmon.

Before you get too perplexed wondering how the donor bank works – and I too have imagined the little critter sitting there in the salmon waiting room with a dirty magazine – it isn’t really the diminutive swimmers themselves but the DNA within them.

Listen to the latest episode of Stellar’s podcast, Something To Talk About:

So, to the alleged close friend who texted the next morning, “Is your chest pregnant?” the answer is no. Not yet, anyway.

The treatment is called Rejuran and it’s apparently the next big cosmetic thing here in Australia, having been common in South Korea for many years.

They reached out to offer me a sample, and after an all-too-fleeting period of research (reading the words “collagen producing”, “firm” and “glowing”), I said yes.

But it raises a bigger question: how can I have claimed to have found peace in all its magical forms while I’m trying desperately to fight the natural process of ageing? I don’t know for sure.

I can only tell you that, in my humble view, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. I think one can be pretty comfortable in one’s skin and still want to do things that maintain or improve one’s aesthetic.

I can value a million attributes and admirable qualities above and beyond the aesthetic, while still doing things I hope will make me feel better about mine – can’t I?

I still want to be healthy and feel and look good, but the reality of not looking so flash doesn’t scare me like it used to; my self-worth is admittedly nowhere near as tied up in the superficial as it used to be.

But there’s no way any of us – unless you’re pretty damn incredible – can completely reprogram a mindset that’s been conditioned over many years of exposure to endless toxic narratives regarding women and their worth. So I’m a realist.

Every day I hope to be a little less affected by messages that have been deliberately drilled into me for decades by people who have felt compelled to judge others publicly. So far, I’m pretty pleased with my progress.

OK, back to the salmon sperm. For those also wondering: no, I didn’t get to browse a catalogue and choose a specimen with blue eyes and full lips.

So if my chest does get pregnant, who knows how these little tackers will look? Thank God I’m far enough along on my healing journey to not care … much.

And if the unthinkable does happen, my six-year-old is desperate for a sibling and a pet. On the bright side – two birds, one stone!
