Having odd socks following a load of laundry is a common experience. We might have just discovered where they’re going.

A viral social media video shows a woman and her roommate in their laundry. Megan Norris can be seen in the video using a hammer (not advised) to pry open the front panel of their top-loading washing machine.

It unveiled a plethora of socks that had vanished.

“At least we’ll never fight about stolen socks again,” Ms Norris captioned the clip.

Brittany Spurlock had a similar experience. She warned people to check their washers after finding 28 socks in the same place.

Rachel did the same.

“Oh my god, that’s where they go? That’s why I always lose them. And it’s freaking black socks,” she declared.

Social media users were stunned.

“How do they get there,” one asked.

“I have the same washer and I just opened it. There is underwear from the previous owner in it,” one commented.

Another said: “Wow, this explains a lot.”

“Okay but can I go knock on my old apartment door and ask for my socks back now? Cuz when I moved last year I had to throw out five socks I couldn’t find mates for,” one added.

Another joked: “When you find out why my silverware keeps disappearing tag me.”

Another commented: “Finally, the doorway to the odd sock alternative dimension has been revealed.”

“Yes!!!! That’s what I thought happens! If you do big loads the socks are more likely to be spun over the top,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “I’m sending this to my husband because how dare he accuse me of losing all the socks!”

Adam Duggan, the category expert from Appliances Online, told news.com.au the most common way socks go “missing” is for them to be tangled in other clothes when being dumped into a top-loader.

“We’ve noticed on occasion when recycling customer’s old top-load washing machines that yes – it is possible for socks to go missing [as per the video],” Mr Duggan said.

“But it’s only something you’d find with top-load washing machines, and only if you empty your washing basket directly into the tub and a sock has slid through the gap at the top of the tub.”

Mr Duggan said people shouldn’t use any of the methods in the clips to open their washing machines. He said it will void the warranty.

“You can prevent it from happening, though, by evenly dispersing the contents of your laundry basket into the washing machine tub by hand, rather than tipping the basket into the washing machine,” he said.

He said the safest thing to do if you were experiencing issues with your washing machine is to speak to the manufacturer.

“When it comes to maintaining your washing machine, there’s a few things you should be doing,” Mr Duggan said.

“A regular drum clean cycle (some washing machines have this but if not, a cycle run at the hottest water temperature the machine goes with a drum clean solution) is recommended every three to six months.

“You should also be cleaning and checking the filters every two to three months, to keep everything pumping the way it should. Filter locations differ, but you can find all the instructions for cleaning them in the user manual. “

“If you can’t find your user manual, don’t stress – manufacturers provide PDF versions of them.”
