Secret meaning behind Matilda hero Hayley Raso's matching tattoo with mum

Hayley Raso was hailed an Aussie hero after the do-or-die match against Canada at the Women's World Cup in 2023. 

And while soccer fans were unable to celebrate a win during the team's first match against Germany at the Paris Olympic Games, the Matildas star was quietly confident all would end well when they played against Canada last year because of an eerie "sign" before the match began.

Raso, who scored two goals for the country during the 4-0 match, has a special matching tattoo with her mum, Renaye, which she believes helped her on the big night. 

The ink is of a full moon and it so happened to be a full moon the night Raso took to the field at Melbourne Stadium.

The full moon was a sign

It was a moment that both mum and daughter spotted prior to kick-off and gave Hayley the confidence she needed as she popped on her studded boots. 

“On the way to the game, on the bus, I text her (mum) and said it’s a full moon,” Hayley said, adding: “She said, ‘It’s a sign’.’’

According to Hayley's mum, the full moon has a special meaning for the two. 

“The full moon is our thing. Every time there’s a full moon we send it to each other,” mum told Channel 7. 

“I just kept looking up to the moon just saying, please come through for her... and it did.

“I can finally breathe, I don’t think I’ve breathed properly for three days," she added.

Renaye took to Instagram to share an image of the moon over the stadium as well as her arm sporting the matching in. 

"Moon over the stadium, matching moon tattoos... mean to be," she captioned the shots. 

And people agreed that the moment was indeed special. 

"The stars were certainly aligned 🙌," one person commented.

The tattoo isn't the only thing that helps the Matilda star through her matches - whether it's with the Matildas or Real Madrid. The signature ribbon she wears in her hair is reportedly worn to honour her grandma.
