Although COVID restrictions delayed their wedding by four months Hawthorne couple Matthew Turnham and Isobel Thorley were delighted with their big day.
The couple, who met on Tinder three years ago and got engaged in Austria, married in Quamby Place, the park next to Noosa’s waterfront Ricky’s River Bar & Restaurant where their reception was held. The 70 guests watched their first dance to Better be Home Soon by Crowded House and the couple honeymooned at Qualia on Hamilton Island.

The proposal?
Walking through Saint Anton in Austria after a morning of snowboarding on January 1, 2019, Matt apparently was trying to find the right moment. Thankfully the backdrop of the mountains made me ask our friends Sammy and Dylan to take some photos of us. I wasn’t expecting Matt to drop to one knee but it made for a perfect proposal.
Hen’s and buck’s nights?
The hen’s night was on the Gold Coast with Sailing in Paradise, while the buck’s was two nights away at Somerset Dam with some paintball action.
Best advice for others planning a wedding?
Have fun! All the little stresses don’t mean anything on the day, remember it’s just about the two of you.
What was your original wedding date and why did you change it?
We were to be married on May 1 at Ricky’s. We moved the date about six weeks out when they brought in wedding restrictions. We first changed it to November but it didn’t sit right, then back to August 28.
What were your emotions around changing plans?
It was really rough. You really build yourselves up for this moment and it all got turned upside down.
What helped you get through the stress?
Each other, as corny as that sounds. Even though we weren’t getting married when or how we originally thought, we got through it.
Advice for other couples whose weddings are impacted by coronavirus?
Stay positive, keep focused on yourself and your partner, in the end the day is all about you two. In a way we found COVID gave us a chance to really think about the little things we wanted.
Why did you have the UFC-themed cake?
We both love watching UFC together, most of the time it’s on a Sunday, so you’ll generally find us on the couch with a drink and some mates enjoying it.
How did you come up with it?
Originally we weren’t going to worry about a cake, but Kev (Matt’s stepdad) kindly insisted. Absolutely blows my mind how well he nailed it!
What would you do differently?
Absolutely nothing. Unless we could go back and slow down time? The day and night went so quickly.
What would you spend more or less on?
Everything was on point! Our advice though, on the night we didn’t have a chance to really take in our surroundings and the amazing styling by Main Event Weddings, which makes having an amazing photographer a must! One of our last-minute changes was getting a videographer too – we are thankful we did.
