Panic ensued and frantic calls were made just hours before the ceremony to find a replacement pair. Luckily everyone saw the funny side in the end and the groom’s mother worked her magic on the sewing machine to ensure everyone was dressed perfectly.
Crisis averted, Sarah Burdett and Lee Giannakopoulos tied the knot in style on a balcony overlooking the Brisbane River at Bar Pacino, Eagle St. The ceremony was followed by a sit down reception for 70 guests with a Mediterranean-inspired menu.
“We went for a simple but elegant theme,” Sarah says.
The couple, who live at Stafford Heights, in Brisbane’s north, and were introduced through mutual friends, honeymooned on the Greek island of Mykonos before travelling around parts of mainland Greece and Italy.
How did Lee propose?
In 2016 we planned a trip to Greece for Lee’s cousin’s wedding. Unbeknown to me, Lee was planning to propose and the task of trying to keep it all under wraps was proving difficult as a lot of people were asking me, “Do you think he will propose?”
I actually didn’t think it was going to happen at all, but during sunset on May 31, on the beautiful island of Santorini, a very nervous Lee got down on his knee and asked a very surprised me to be his wife. I very happily said “Yes!”

Special memories?
Having all our family and close friends there with us on the day. All of Lee’s family travelled from Melbourne and I had family fly over from the UK. Both our father’s speeches were so heartwarming and very special to us and seeing everyone just have a great time (including ourselves) just meant the world to us.
What made this uniquely your wedding?
Our wedding was uniquely ours as we planned most of it ourselves, and with the advice we received from others, we kept things simple.
Anything you would spend more or less on?
Overall we were happy with the amount we spent for the wedding. Perhaps having the suits tailor-made would have been a nice extra touch, but other than that probably we would spend more on the honeymoon.
Best advice for other couples planning a wedding?
Communication is the key. With all the stress and emotion of planning your perfect day ensure that you both speak often and check on each other. Once the day has arrived let it all go and let your celebrant/MC/venue staff just run everything.
