Car trouble the day before the wedding added to the fun for this bride and groom. Drama hit when Chris accidentally put the wrong petrol in Jessica’s car on the way to the
pre-wedding accommodation and they both thought he had wrecked the engine.
Lovebirds throw a surprise wedding
Couple win their dream wedding day
“Dad, you can now kiss your bride.”
Luckily the fuel problem was easily resolved, allowing them to continue on their journey.
“I thought it was absolutely
hilarious and was happy to ditch the car,” laughs Jess.
“Chris didn’t initially find it so hilarious but once we realised it was going to be fine, we had a good giggle.”
The couple, of Holland Park West, in Brisbane’s southeast, went on to enjoy a wedding inspired by beautiful Australian native flowers at Mt Alford’s Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm, in the Scenic Rim region.
Jessica says, “The ceremony was actually so much fun. It didn’t feel particularly serious or traditional at all, which was what we wanted. We were both so happy with how it all went.”
The newlyweds, who met at the after-party of South Brisbane’s St Laurence’s College semi-formal in 2009, enjoyed a short honeymoon in Montville, on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, and are also planning a big trip to Europe in 2020.
How did Christopher propose?
Chris proposed at the peak of a hike we took on the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand. I was particularly surprised and accidentally swore at him.
First dance?
Do You Remember – Jack Johnson.
What made this uniquely your wedding?
I guess our wedding wasn’t particularly unique, but we just really tried to make it a laid-back affair without any of the seriousness of a traditional wedding.
Paul Voge, our celebrant, kicked it off by organising everything to a tee to ensure that it was a stress-free and hilarious ceremony. He even organised for everyone to sing Happy Birthday to my mum (Sue), whose birthday was the next day.
Our photographers Amy and Jaryd (from Create Photography) just felt like an extension of the bridal party and Ruby and Sam from Kooroomba made everything feel so seamless.
By the end of the night we felt as though we had lifelong friends dancing with our aunties and uncles, so it definitely felt like we had achieved our goal.
Special memories?
The boys and guests mingling and getting ready for the ceremony while the girls and I were able to spend half an hour tucked away out of sight, drinking champagne and relaxing before everything kicked off.
Also, while we were taking photos during canapes and it was just the two of us, we were able just to chat about everything that had just happened and have a few little moments to ourselves.
Best advice for other couples planning a wedding?
Try not to stress, it all works out on the day somehow. I know so many people said this to me, and I did not believe them for a second until our day came around and it turned out to be 100 per cent true.
