The Brisbane cafe serving enormous portions and great value for money

The serving sizes are colossal and the menu is massive. So if you’ve got a hankering for a big breakfast this is the place to go.

“That’s the biggest serve I’ve possibly ever seen,” says my friend in astonishment, staring down at what’s appropriately named the “sugar daddy of all bagels” on the menu. We’re at the new Andonis eatery on Robertson St in Fortitude Valley – the third Brisbane cafe of the same name from local hospitality entrepreneur Anthony Kekkou.

While his other venues in Yeerongpilly and Yeronga boast a more relaxed, suburban vibe and are geared to the outdoors, here the look is a little more industrial cafeteria with concrete floors, exposed ceilings and a bar lit by ’90s-influenced purple neons.

What remains unchanged throughout all three ventures, however, is the hulking portion sizes – so monstrous a single dish would most likely account for my entire daily calorie intake.

If you’re a big eater, this place is heaven. If you’re someone who finds it difficult to decide when it comes to too many choices, this place may just be hell. The menu’s length is as colossal as the meals themselves, encompassing an all-day breakfast with options including two types of eggs Benedict, savoury crepes, loaded croissants, acai bowls and more, while from 10.30am lunch-type options such as burgers, pastas, salads, steak and chips, and Greek favourites like yiros and a souvlaki plate kick in.

There are also their Insta-famous desserts, like Belgian waffles stacked higher than a Jenga tower with ice cream, Nutella, chocolate bars, Oreos, strawberries and more.

We ask the friendly young waiter what the lightest dishes on the menu are and when she replies “the eggs Benedict” we know we’re in trouble. Her other recommendation is the aforementioned bagel ($20). Despite it being served with enough fries to feed an entire flock of seagulls, the bagel itself won’t test the elastic in your pants, with the bread ring lined with smoked salmon and topped with two firm-cooked poached eggs and hollandaise. It’s a simple but tasty affair made more generous with a fan of avocado and triangles of halloumi off to the side.

Just as elephantine are the soft shell prawn tacos ($19.50). Two tortillas arrive crowned with three crumbed prawns each, diced tomato and onion, avocado, halloumi and a sort of Neapolitan sauce that would perhaps be better swapped for an aioli or tartare. They’re so big they require a knife and fork to eat.

Andonis’s cocktails and loaded shakes also come super-sized, so perhaps stick to the well-made Fonzie Abbott coffees if you want any chance of being able to finish your meal.

The menu’s warning “Caution: our portion sizes are huge” is no joke.

So if it’s value for money you’re chasing, and to leave more stuffed than a taxidermy exhibit, Andonis is arguably unbeatable.
