Logan mates open burger place with a difference

Four mates are hoping to turn their love of burgers and ribs into a national restaurant powerhouse with the opening of their store south of Brisbane.

Nutrition showdown: which fast food is the healthiest?

Four Logan mates are hoping to turn their love of burgers and ribs into a national restaurant powerhouse with the opening of Big Buns.

The Browns Plains eatery is aiming to open on October 1 and will specialise in burgers, ribs and mocktails, that are elevated above the usual fast food offering.

“We’re not going too much into the hard-core greasy burgers where everything is just dripping out, but we’re not going to the really, really healthy burgers – we’re trying to find the balance,” says Esad-Naci Erol, who owns the venture with his brother, Yunus-Emre, and mates, Oguzhan Cevik and Mohammad Belal Hamid.

All four have long-term hospitality experience, with the siblings’ parents owning bakery wholesaler Sunshine Breads and three kebab shops on the Gold Coast, while Cevik and Hamid are behind popular cafe Mi Casa in Underwood.

Big Buns’ menu will boast five beef burgers, five chicken burgers, five plant-based/vegan burgers, plus a special fish burger; while the ribs will be either beef or lamb and be smoked in-house or chargrilled.

There will also be a range of fancy milkshakes, plus signature mocktails including the Red Devil and a tropical version.

“It’s not going to be your average takeaway burger joint,” says Naci.

The fit-out is also sure to set it apart from the competition, with a rustic, but contemporary design including booth and banquette seating for about 100 guests, hanging greenery, industrial lights and a special Instagram wall with a neon sign that reads “I like big buns and I cannot lie” as a cheeky reference to Sir Mix-a-Lot’s huge hit song Baby Got Back.

“We’re open to everyone – families, groups, friends. We’re trying to create a great atmosphere and great vibe where people want to come,” Naci said.

But the Browns Plains restaurant will be just the first of many, the gents hope, with plans to expand and perhaps even franchise in time.

“We’ve got big ambitions,” Naci said. “Our aim is once we get this up and going, get the system right in place, make sure everything is perfect … we’re definitely looking to the future to hopefully open up more.”
