In a grand gesture of love, George Sheppard surprised his new bride Kathleen Seagar with a song written especially for her on the night of their wedding.
George, singer in Brisbane band Sheppard, performed Feels Like Home for Kathleen after delivering his speech at the reception with the song released publicly later that night.
The Teneriffe couple tied the knot on April 13, the day of their 10-year anniversary, in a private house called Casa Campana near Cabarita Beach in northern New South Wales.
The pair hired the house for the week to soak in all the celebrations before the big day took place on the Thursday, when they married before 60 guests in a Mediterranean/Santorini/pink themed wedding.
The couple chose Wilson Pickett’s Land of 1000 Dances as their first dance song, which was one of many special moments for the pair, including walking together down the aisle and Kathleen’s mum revealing a special
cross-stitch piece for the pair which she’d taken months to create.
How did you meet?
George: We met in 2012, I was introduced by Kathleen’s sister Alex and immediately fell in love with her, but as we were part of the same friendship group, it took a year for us to start officially dating as I had to be careful not to ruin the friendship group.
The proposal?
I proposed to Kathleen on Wilson Island, a very private and small island about 80km offshore from Gladstone. I filmed the whole proposal.
Hen’s/buck’s celebrations?
We both had two separate events, one was more of a getaway with our groomsmen/bridesmaids, then we each had a more traditional party back here in Brisbane with our extended friendship groups. Kathleen got dressed up like a princess for her hen’s, but I was forced to wear a baby’s outfit.
Not fair! Ha!
How did you choose your wedding venue?
We had been looking at venues for some time, but we decided to start looking at nice houses, and Casa Campana was immediately recommended to us by one of Kathleen’s physio clients. Her sister Alex and I went for a drive to check it out, and within two minutes of walking in the front door, it was clear that it was the perfect spot.
How did the bride choose her wedding dress? She tried on more than 10 different dresses, and nothing was quite right. Thankfully, she found the perfect dress at the last minute and bought the dress two weeks before the wedding. It only arrived three days before we left for the house!
Did you do anything differently?
We actually walked down the aisle together at the same time. It was a beautiful moment. We did the first look when I got to see her in her wedding dress for the first time, but then we decided we wanted to walk down the aisle together to Adele’s rendition of Make You Feel My Love.
Top wedding hack?
Getting married at a private location rather than a standard wedding venue. The cost
of having Casa Campana for a whole week was the same price as having a wedding
venue for one day. There was a little more planning involved, but getting to choose our drinks, cake, catering, videographer, styling, etc certainly made the wedding feel unique to us.
What was the budget for your wedding? $80,000.
What would you spend more or less on?
We bought waaaaay too much booze. We are easily stocked for the rest of the year. Otherwise everything was perfect.
Any surprising details about your wedding?
I wrote a song as a gift for Kathleen called Feels Like Home and surprised her with it after my speech on the day. It then had an official release on streaming services at midnight that night.
What was the standout moment of the day? The speeches were all really fantastic. Kathleen’s mother revealed a special cross- stitch she’d been working on for months. But otherwise, I think the song was a very special moment.
What was your bridal party protocol and how did you divvy up costs?
We paid for the accommodation, hair and make-up, but our bridal party paid for their own dresses and suits.
What would you do differently?
Nothing. It was honestly our perfect day.
What was special about your wedding cake?
It was from Rebellyous Cake Co. We had a 70cm circular, Italian style pastry and custard flat lay with fresh berries on top. We served it with the champagne tower because Kathleen is obsessed with cake.
