Shocking videos have captured a 4m shark at a ‘very, very popular’ beach at Double Island Point

Shocking footage shows a four-metre shark in shallow water at a “very, very popular” Queensland beach, with a veteran surfer saying he’d never seen anything of its size in 20 years.

Double Island Point Shark Sighting on Paradise Beach

A four-metre shark was spotted at a “very, very popular” beach at Double Island Point on Friday about 3pm.

Rod Kriz, who has been surfing around Paradise Beach for 20 years, said he would occasionally see sharks but “nothing like this one”.

“I have never seen a shark that big in the shallow waters before … it was also unusual for it to cruise around the area for nearly an hour,” he said.

“I just got out of the water after surfing for three hours with two other guys and I had a bit of a break to go swimming.”

He said the surf “dropped off” and so he decided to go for a swim but as he emerged from the water his wife frantically yelled ‘SHARK!’.

“I thought ‘Oh, yeah that’s not a big deal’ and then I saw the size of it – it was huge – I reckon it was probably four metres long,” he said.

“My wife and I watched the shark for about an hour … he just kept circling that same spot which is normally very, very popular with swimmers and surfers.”

Mr Kriz said he was glad Friday was an “ordinary day” and that a lot of four-wheel drives had not been able to get through to that particular location.

He said on Thursday there was another shark scare in the area but “it might have been the same shark.”

“I didn’t see the shark on Thursday but another guy did … a group of surfers then paddled in together and said ‘there’s a big shark out there’,” he said.

Mr Kriz said he is “pretty confident” the four metre shark was a hammerhead with another “four and five sharks” in tow.

“There were a few bull sharks but they were all just cruising so they must have just been feeding off the hammerhead and looking around for scraps.”

“Certainly the other sharks would have been enough to get me out of the water.”

“I paddled around to Spookie which is the name of the other surf spot – it’s called spookies for a reason and another crew of surfers were there and the day before they paddled back in a group – I thought that was a bit strange and then one of the guys gave me a shark symbol.”

He said a shark spotting wasn’t enough to stop him from “surfing the inside” on both Thursday and Friday.

“But I would have been interested to see how I would have reacted if I was still in the water and a big thing like that cruised around me.”
