A mission to rescue a bull stranded in shark-infested waters has ended in tragedy this afternoon.
Onlookers told The Courier-Mail the Carnudge Droughtmaster, believed to have been dragged dozens of kilometers down the Mary River, died as rescuers tried to pull it from the harbour.
The bull stranded on a sandbank was initially thought to be missing from Rob Orphant’s Tiaro property but after several boats reached it this morning, Mr Orphant confirmed it wasn’t his prized animal.
His missing bull was found dead downstream.
“The breeders have been contacted and they are endeavouring to find the bull’s current owner,” Mr Orphant posted to social media this morning.
“Thank you to all involved for your efforts.
“We will try and save him as the tide rises.”
Residents concerned the water is full of bull sharks called for help from helicopter and towing companies before boaties were seen throwing a rope around the bull about 1pm.
A small bull shark was filmed swimming among debris in the Maryborough’s flooded Queens Park.
The footage was shared by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday after the park went under water due to heavy rainfall and the rising Mary River.
Fraser Coast Council confirmed Deputy Mayor Darren Everard and a disaster manager headed to the river mouth to see how if the council could help before the bull died.
Garry Cammelot who stopped by River Heads this morning said he could see the bull moving about 5am.
“Knowing the big struggle he would have had overnight to survive, and not a lot of people being able to help him out, it was hard to sit there and watch,” he said.
