Dozens of pooches at Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) waiting for their “furever” home chose their own Christmas presents, with hundreds of gifts for the rescue animals donated by Pet Circle, complete with Santa and an Elf for cuddle sessions.
Every animal was allowed to spend as much time in the Christmas zone as they wanted to, allowing enough time for sniffing, licking and marking their territory on their ideal Christmas present.
Despite being presented with more than 300 chew toys, enrichment toys and squeaky toys, the majority of dogs ran to the Christmas tree in an attempt to bowl it over before they went to the toy pile. Piggie was the exception, finding treats buried in the pile of toys, ignoring the allure of the Christmas tree.
The six-year-old French Bulldog came to AWLQ with his teeth grinded down and despite his challenges, the pooch has won the hearts of every volunteer.
Rosalie the American Staffy has been waiting almost two months for a new home and despite picking a chew toy straight away, she went back for more presents a few minutes later.
Kobie, the four-year-old Sharpei Cross American Staffy was initially shy, while other dogs were understandably scared of Santa.
The star of the morning was Saint, an 11-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier that couldn’t decide between showering volunteers with love and picking a present.
Just in the last seven days, Animal Welfare League Queensland helped more than 230 animals find their forever home as part of the Home for Christmas Adoption Sale, with adult cats available for $29 and adult dogs available for $99.
Now in their second year of collaboration with Animal Welfare League Queensland, Kristen Durkin from Pet Circle said they want to brighten the festive season for rescue animals.
“Our team at Pet Circle believe in helping pets have healthier, happier lives, and understand the profound difference a simple toy can make in the lives of shelter animals. We’re not just providing toys, we’re giving these wonderful animals a sense of care and engagement as they wait for their forever homes,” she said.
