Angry cassowary hunts down North Queensland rangers

A group of Far North Queensland rangers have shared hilarious footage of the moment a deadly cassowary aggressively chased after them along one of their quad-bike trails.

The rangers were riding bikes while conducting track inspections long Wuthathi Country on the Northern Cape York Peninsula when they spotted the deadly bird among the shrubbery.

When Wuthathi ranger Cameron Wilson first laid eyes on the cassowary, he signalled to fellow ranger Clayton Enoch to keep a safe distance, but it was too late.

The bird charged.

“Cam was waving at me to slow down and I was like, ‘What for?’ Mr Enoch told Australian Rural and Regional News.

“Then he held two fingers up to his eyes and pointed behind me and I saw the cassowary in the scrub. I thought, ‘Holy s***’.”

Mr Wilson’s quad bike became stuck in an embankment and he scrambled onto the back of his Mr Enoch’s bike with the bird hot in pursuit.

But the journey was not without its perils.

“I got whacked by a branch with green ants on it and had them crawling all over me at the same time,” Mr Enoch said.

More rangers came to the rescue, and managed to distract the big bird, bringing the crazy cassowary chase to an end.

No injuries were reported from the event and within hours, the video had gone viral.

Cassowaries are native to northeastern parts of Australia and a famously known for having deadly sharp claws and have been known to kill humans.
