They hatched a plan to keep the birth a secret

Teagan Franz and her husband, a young couple expecting their first child, decided to keep the details of their induction date a secret from their parents and family, opting to surprise them instead with their granddaughter/niece after she was born.

As their due date approached, they hatched a plan to keep the arrival of their little one top secret. And they managed to pull it off brilliantly and documented their priceless reactions on TikTok.

However, people couldn't help but criticise their decision, saying it was an "insult" and "disrespectful" to their family.

"Who's baby is that?"

In the video, which now has over five million views, Teagan made a compilation of their family's reaction.

First up was her brother, who saw the baby in a car seat, got a massive grin on his face and then gave his sister a big hug. Then, her mum sees the baby next and bursts into happy tears and embraces Teagan as well.

Then in another part, Teagan's unsuspecting mother-in-law walks into their house to find Teagan's sister holding the baby.

Little did she know it was her grandchild.

"Who's baby is that?" she asks Teagan, who's behind her.

She then tells her and she immediately drops what she was holding and bends over in shock, before hugging Teagan.

Lastly, her brother is the last one to experience the surprise, and upon realising, he goes, "Did you have the baby? Already?! WHAT THE DAMN D*CK?"

The reactions were nothing short of hilarious, and the couple's decision to capture these moments on TikTok allowed them to relive the surprise over and over again.

But after the clip quickly gained traction, critics started rearing their heads...

"You owe it to them to keep them involved"

"It's insulting for you not to tell your family about your newborn," one person wrote.

Another said, "You should have told them as soon as you were in labour. How self-centred to keep it to yourself."

Then a third claimed, "You can't do this. You owe it to them to keep them involved in the pregnancy."

"This isn't cute," slammed a fourth.

"My mum would guilt trip me so much," remarked a different woman.

But supporters defended Teagan and her husband, saying, "You have the right to announce it however you please."

Another said, "I love this. We need more of this sort of wholesome content on TikTok."

"This is so sweet - you do you mama," concluded someone else.

Why they decided to keep it a secret

Teagan later came out with a follow-up video explaining the reasons they decided to keep it a secret.

"It meant we had a phone-free labour, gave me and my family a day to spend together without having to respond to everyone," she explained.

"Everyone wasn't stressed and waiting for the news and I gave my family the best surprise of their lives and created special memories."

How they pulled off the surprise

Then in another video, she explained exactly how she pulled it all off.

She messaged her family telling them that her due date was Saturday the 28th of May and so they should organise a dinner for the Friday night before.

But she explains, "I was actually induced on the 24th of May and they met her 48 hours after she was born."
