'It's decaf, right?' Aussie mum shamed in mums' group for ordering a coffee

"I said I really wanted a coffee and one woman in particular was like 'ah, so you’re not breastfeeding?'"

I got mum-shamed at playgroup when I asked for a coffee

An Aussie woman has opened up about being shamed for drinking coffee as a breastfeeding mum.

But not by a barista - but from within her mothers' group; a space meant for support and no judgement.

"I was really shocked by it"

Mum Yvette shared a TikTok, explaining what happened.

Talking to the camera, she says, "I got mum-shamed today. I went to a playgroup today, which I haven’t been to since I had my son.

"I just took my daughter today and people were asking ‘how did it go’ and everyone was super lovely and welcoming, you know, very kind.

"I mentioned I really wanted a coffee and one woman there in particular was like ‘ah, so you’re not breastfeeding?’ I was like ‘I am breastfeeding’.

"She was like, ‘you’re having decaf right?’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not having decaf, I’m having proper coffee’."

The woman continued to interrogate Yvette: "She was so concerned by me having a coffee and was like, ‘doesn’t that affect your babies’ sleep and stuff like that?’ [I said] I haven’t noticed.

"She was like, 'you’re having a really weak one, right?' She was really concerned about me having a coffee.

"I think if I had realised to start off with, I would’ve been like, ‘p**s off’, but I was really shocked by it."

"Anyway, I had my coffee and she’s an absolute k**b."

Yvette later wrote: "I think pushing it with multiple questions and suggestions was the issue."

"Coffee comments annoy me"

Many viewers related to Yvette's experience.

"This is why I don’t do mum groups," one said.

Another added, "Someone at a mothers' group asked me if I was worried I was going to give my baby diabetes because I was demand feeding him."

Others also addressed the validity of the coffee concerns, with this mum saying, "The coffee comments annoyed me so much. I’m still breastfeeding my 20-month-old and I have 1-2 cafe coffees a day and never cared!"

Finally, this mum gave her opinion that, "Two-three cups of coffee is considered safe to consume while breastfeeding!"
