My baby had hot coffee spilled on her; this is my warning to other parents

"The barista stood in the wrong area to hand it over, and it splashed on her from head to toe. I feel so down thinking I can't protect my child."

5 tips that can save your kid's life

A Sydney mum was left stunned in a grocery store after her baby was burnt by a takeaway coffee.

The woman was waiting for her coffee with her nine-month-old daughter beside her in the pram when the incident occurred.

As the barista was passing the hot coffee cup over the top of the coffee machine to the mother, the employee accidentally dropped the beverage, and it landed on the baby in the pram.

“She dropped it and all the hot coffee splashed onto my baby. Her face, near eyes, neck, body, stroller, etc," the distraught mother wrote in a post in a private Sydney mum's Facebook group.

"She cried immediately.”

“Please take her to a hospital! This is serious!”

The mother explained that she took to social media to query how to proceed with the incident.

“I don't know what proper procedure I should follow? They did not ask me to fill the incident report, they said they were gonna fill it by themselves," she wrote.

The baby - who was thankfully wearing a long sleepsuit at the time - was quickly wiped down with a cold, wet towel.

As an apology, the cafe offered the woman a voucher, which she politely declined.

"I feel so down at the moment thinking I can't protect my baby, she is just nine months and in the meantime feel disappointed how they handled the incident," she wrote.

Fellow members of the Facebook group were quick to comment and share their horror over the incident, with many also encouraging the mother to take her baby to hospital to check the burns.

“Hey mumma, don’t want to alarm you, but you really need to take your bubba to the emergency department of the hospital. Just because a burn doesn’t look serious above the skin, underneath it could still be causing pain and doing damage to your little one," one parent wrote.

'That's not the correct procedure to hand over coffee'

Another mum added, “This is so upsetting and disturbing it made me cry. I am so sorry that any of this happened to you and your baby never mind all of it… This needs to be escalated beyond management.”

Other commenters calling for the grocer to be named and shamed, highlighted that the barista should not have handed the hot coffee cup to the patron over the coffee machine.

The mother responded that she was aware this was incorrect practice. "They have CCTV and they checked it and the person in charge admitted that's not the correct procedure to give the coffee through that area.”

While at the time of writing, the woman was still waiting for a response from management, there was also concern that there was a lack of first aid at the scene from the store. If a burn occurs, it’s imperative that action is taken immediately to avoid further damage.
