Queensland mum transforms backyard into Hamptons-style haven

Spending just over $2800 at Bunnings, mum-of-three Eleesha Quinn has transformed her backyard into a luxe holiday retreat.

Genius DIY Bunnings hacks

With international travel now impossible and a question mark remaining over interstate holidays, Eleesha Quinn knew exactly what she wanted to do when she bought her new home.

The mum-of-three, who has more than 205,000 followers on her @the.quinn.girls Instagram account, bought a new property to renovate in Bundaberg, Queensland, last month.

Like many of us, the Quinns had big travel plans for 2020 which unfortunately were cancelled, with the family opting to put the money into creating a vacation-style space in the backyard.

“We just wanted a space that we could get away from the hustle and bustle while we’re doing the reno,” she told news.com.au.

“Obviously we’re not able to go on holidays, not able to take a break from the renovations and go on that overseas trip which we would normally do throughout the year.”

Using a handful of simple products, the Bunnings ambassador Eleesha was able to create a dreamy outdoor space perfect for pretending you are sipping cocktails in the Hamptons or sunning yourself somewhere in the Mediterranean.

Eleesha, whose cubby for her three girls went viral last year, said the area was the perfect “parental retreat”.

“For mum and dad after a big day renovating it’s out on the decks for drinks in the afternoon,” she said with a laugh.

Taking around four weeks, Eleesha built the outdoor deck with the help of her husband and dad, laying down a wooden deck and pavers.

“We literally just clean-slated the whole area; it was all volcanic rock and an old garden bed,” she said.

“White for me is as good as a white sandy beach.”

They added a white patio frame on top which they strung with $19 bauble fairy lights and added a portable cast iron pizza oven which cost $785 – a fraction of the cost of built-in versions.

Eleesha accessorised the space with leafy potted plants which fit in perfectly with the backyard’s existing palm trees, adding in white and natural wicker furniture, as well as an outdoor day bed.

All up the outdoor reno job came in at just over $2800 and Eleesha said they are already getting their money’s worth.

“It’s going to be that progressive space that we’ll always continue to add to it. It’s that one area that blurs itself into our home as well, so it’s very indoor-outdoor living,” she said.

Eleesha wants other families out there to know that it’s easier than ever to transform your backyard into a holiday oasis in time for summer – even if it’s as simple as a new set of cushions.

“We built a deck, but you don’t have to. Somebody, if they had a corner in their backyard, they could still recreate the same sort of looking space with pavers that they pick up off Facebook Marketplace,” she said.

“If you can’t plant a palm because it mightn’t survive where you are, get a nice outdoor cushion that has palms on it. There’s always a way to create a certain type of vibe in the space.”
