It’s normally reserved for champagne, but caviar is now set to be matched with beer as part of a bold Brisbane tasting event.
Local beer guru and founder of Beermatt Matt Kirkegaard will host a first-of-its-kind beer and caviar pairing this Saturday at Howard Smith Wharves for the precinct’s three-day outdoor lager festival Lagerpalooza.
“It’s something that I have long wanted to do,” said Mr Kirkegaard.
“Before it became rare and so expensive, caviar was served at a bar in places like New York as a salty snack that encouraged patrons to drink more beer. It was only once it became rare that it become the luxury good we know today, and more commonly associated with champagne. I wanted to claim it back for beer.”
The beer guru will team up with local caviar supplier Peter Gross from Calendar Cheese and Felons Brewing to host the event at the uber cheap price of just $20.
“I have seen caviar tastings cost close to $200, so it’s a bargain. We’re effectively just doing it below cost,” Mr Kirkegaard said.
The pairing will team three varieties of luxury fish eggs: Oscietra Gold, Royal Oscietra and Beluga, with three different beers to show off the versatility and complexity of the lagers.
Mr Kirkegaard said the key to the perfect match was to use a beer with a “delicate hop bitterness character for the saltiness, and a nice malt profile to pair with the rich butteriness of the caviar”.
“As with any food/drink pairing, you don’t want one flavour to overwhelm the other, and caviar is quite a delicate flavour so a lighter flavoured beer is what you want to pair with,” he said.
