Beers brewed with oat, coffee, jalapeno the latest trends

Move over IPAs and sours, beers containing oats, spicy jalapenos and coffee are becoming the must-drink brews – and a festival is coming where you can try them all.

THEY’RE a winter breakfast staple for many, now oats are being used to brew beer.

The porridge star has become a hit with brewers looking to add creaminess to their ales while keeping them vegan-friendly.

Managing director of the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular Mike Bray said the trend had taken off this year.

“That is very much the emerging style of the season,” he said. “It does give you that full-body, creamier taste and I think we’ll see it through the next season.”

Mr Bray said about 15 per cent of the bespoke beers that would be available at the GABS Brisbane event this Saturday, June 12 would contain oats.

But the grain juice was not the only weird ingredient finding its way into beer.

Mr Bray said the 112 brewers from across Australia who would be involved in this weekend’s festival – regarded as one of the best beer events in the world – had outdone themselves with kooky combinations created just for GABS.

“The brewers are pushing the boundaries more than ever,” he said.

“A year in COVID has given them time to come up with some incredible things.”

Some of the adventurous offerings include a jalapeno beer from Two Birds Brewing, a Dirty Chai IPA from Brisbane’s Fonzie Abbott, and a banana, chocolate and coffee dunkles weissbier from Urban Alley Brewery.

Also a trend were beer and cocktail fusions such as the Little Creatures Stoutini – a combo of an espresso martini and a stout and the barrel aged pina colada beliner weisse from Mountain Goat Beer.

Festival goers will be able to try up to five beers at a time with tasting paddles from more than 350 taps. The event will also feature street food, entertainment, beer education, games and more. Tickets at gabsfestival.com
