A new Brisbane restaurant will be full of “Karens” ready to serve residents with serious attitude and terrible service.
The only constant promised by Karen’s Diner, set to open at Southbank in January, is the American comfort food.
“Head Karen” and Viral Ventures director Aden Levin said the questionable service at his 1950s-style diner was all part of the fun with patrons welcome to dish their disdain back at the staff.
“Karen’s is just a very fun, silly dining experience,” he said.
“It’s a place where people can come and vent their life frustrations at staff, they can get it back from our staff.
“It’s a place where we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we deliver good food and pride ourselves on having bad service.”
The restaurant also offers cocktails but Mr Levin said there was more to the experience than just wining and dining.
Waiters are out to embarrass their guests with plenty of games and activities to get cheeks blushing.
“Whether it’s making you sing a karaoke song in front of the whole diner or doing a worst-dress fashion parade, there’s lots of stupid things that happen in the dining experience,” Mr Levin said.
He said Viral Ventures hosted events and managed venues across the country, with staff copping plenty of flack from “Karens” over the years without the opportunity to serve it back.
A Sydney version of the restaurant has been a hit with Brisbane and Melbourne to follow.
“People have been pent up in lockdown and our diner is a place where they can come and release that anger in a nice, controlled environment,” Mr Levin.
“We saw the opportunity with Karens trending in the media and we thought why not create a place where we embrace the Karen control and everyone can be a Karen.”
An opening date for the Brisbane Karen’s Diner will be announced in coming weeks and the pop-up venue is expected to remain for about a year.
