Quirky new dining concept launches in Bowen Hills

Brisbane hospitality heavyweights have teamed up to launch a kooky new dining concept with two entirely different eateries under the one roof.

Brisbane’s inner north is set to welcome a new culinary concept that’s completely out of the box.

Bowen Hills’ Uno Sushi and Soul Black is the work of friends and long-time hospitality gurus Eric Choi, Sue Han and Jai Lim, taking two entirely different food businesses and throwing them together under the one roof.

Just a California roll from the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Uno Sushi will take up the right side of the tenancy and is Mr Choi’s baby – a Japanese eatery serving up hand rolls and nigiri, sashimi, donburi and bento boxes packed with the likes of karaage, spiced pork and teriyaki.

While on the left side of the building will be Soul Black – an espresso bar run by Ms Han and Mr Lim pouring their own signature blend of Fonzie Abbott coffee as the house brew, in addition to a rotating line-up of single origins from local roasters for filter, batch and cold press. Their small kitchen will also turn out cafe favourites like avo on toast, bacon and egg rolls and deli sandwiches, alongside croissants, bread, cakes and cookies, baked on-site by pastry chef Anna Choi.

“The concept is one shop in two different sections – one is sushi, one is a cafe,” Mr Lim said of the beautiful light timber and white tile fit-out.

“So at breakfast we will be pushing to sell coffee, sandwiches or (a) toastie, and then at lunchtime they can come have a sushi roll or donburi rice.”

The team comes with great pedigree with Ms Han the current owner of New Farm’s incredibly popular King Arthur Cafe, and having previously owned the likes of Pitch & Fork in Toowong and Flick N Beans in Bowen Hills; while Uno Sushi will be the seventh Brisbane restaurant for Mr Choi, who also owns Domaa in North Lakes.

Although the venue is sure to offer a quick takeaway option for many, there will also be a 30-40 seat covered outdoor dining area for guests to sip and stay a little longer with banquette seating, hanging plants and timber detailing.

The venue is expected to open within the fortnight and will operate Monday to Friday.
