Kirra Pizza Hut to close for good on July 14

It’s overlooked the Gold Coast for almost 40 years, and there have been ongoing rumours of its demise, but within just days the Kirra Pizza Hut will serve its final slice.

IT’S the last supper for a Gold Coast dining icon.

The Kirra Pizza Hut, which has overlooked the famous Kirra Beach for almost 40 years, will close for good on Sunday after the Gold Coast City Council decided not to renew the venture’s lease.

The decision has left locals cheesed off as generations of families have eaten at the prime beachfront restaurant, one of the few remaining dine-in locations for the fast food giant.

However, with the current lease expiring this weekend, the council has called for new tenders to lease the space at the Kirra Beach Pavilion, which is also home to the neighbouring surf life saving club.

It was revealed last month that Pizza Hut had not made the short list, meaning Sunday will be the last day of trading, with up to 30 jobs to disappear.

Surf club officials fear they could cop the rough end of the (ham and) pineapple with a new venture potentially harming the club’s own operations.

Pizza Hut has sponsored club patrols and provided free meals to volunteer life savers for years.

A sign outside the restaurant has informed diners the ‘Gold Coast City Council no longer want us here’.

Last month, restaurant owner Tom Singh expressed his disappointment at having to close the business he took over three years ago.

The Pizza Hut briefly shut its doors in 2016, before the arrival of Mr Singh.

However, despite his own plans to renovate the heritage-listed site, Mr Singh last month said he was told the council did not want a fast food venue on the site.
