Is Craft Beer King?

A WHOPPING 1000sq m, 500-seat brewery and gastropub, set to rival the iconic Little Creatures breweries in Fremantle and Geelong, is set to open in Brisbane as the anchor tenant at the new Howard Smith Wharf development.

Called Felons Brewing Co, it is the dream of HSW director Adam Flaskas and will be one of the star attractions at the new $110 million restoration of the 90-year-old wharves into a restaurant, dining and entertainment precinct along the Brisbane River.

“The brewery is a key pillar within the Howard Smith Wharves precinct and it is one of the main reasons for the whole precinct,” said Mr Flaskas.

The working brewery, restaurant and bar is due to open in October and will be run by ex-Little Creatures and White Rabbit staffer Ash Cranston.

“I just couldn’t miss the chance to do something as iconic as this for Brisbane first and foremost, and for beer in Australia and Queensland as well,” said Mr Cranston.

“With our experience and background from working at Little Creatures, who are pretty famous for brewery experiences both in Fremantle and Geelong, we think we can definitely make something just as iconic as those ones.”

The brewery’s tanks delivered tomorrow, with 17 stainless steel 3m x 2m vessels arriving on eight semi-trailers.

They will then become the centrepiece of the venture, which will allow guests to get up and close with brewer, former Little Creatures heavyweight Tom Champion.

“You’ll literally be able to walk right up to where the brewer is and have a chat to him as he’s making beer,” said Mr Cranston.

The development will feature a range of restaurants and bars with spectacular views of the Story Bridge and CBD skyline.

Felons’ launch continues the boom in Brisbane breweries with a number of new facilities due to open soon across the city including Soapbox Beer in Fortitude Valley, a $15 million brewing incubator by Brisbane Brew Partners in Morningside and the $30 million brewery and tap room at Murrarie from Scotland’s BrewDog.
