Brisbane’s Chinatown Mall is set for a makeover, with a developer to spend close to $1m renovating the landmark strip.
The project aims to beautify the concrete playground and help activate the space ahead of a string of new tenancies opening later this year.
The works are being initiated by Tribune Properties Pty Ltd, the developer behind the mall’s $375m commercial office tower currently housing Urban Utilities.
They will include the installation of three new garden beds, low set seating and decorative lighting and poles, as well as moving the carp installation further into the mall.
“The Chinatown Mall is approaching 40 years old and with a new building recently delivered it was the perfect opportunity to also rejuvenate the streetscape,” said Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard.
“Brisbane’s Chinatown Mall is attracting new investment and attention with leading Australian hospitality groups also coming into the area and I believe it will continue to be [a] destination for people to visit into the future and a great asset for Brisbane’s night-time economy.”
After Covid led to a mass exodus of the mall and years of empty tenancies, new life is being breathed into Brisbane’s cultural icon, with new dining precinct Mr Duncans set to launch at the end of the month.
The 280-seat venue will include five kitchens serving different cuisines, as well as a bar and cafe.
Meanwhile, the site of former yum cha institution King of Kings at the end of the mall will be transformed into a new adult’s playground, with Ballers Clubhouse due to launch at the end of the year offering food, drinks and social games for over 18s.
The rejuvenation works are due to start within the next few weeks and finish in May.
