Custard-filled pretzels, pizza pretzels and alcohol-free beer – get ready for an Oktoberfest like no other when Queensland’s biggest festival of all things German kicks off on Friday.

Spread across this weekend and next, the event, which has become one of the biggest Oktoberfest activities outside of Germany, will be held at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills.

Alongside rides, entertainment, music, dancing and competitions, will be an all new food and drink line up with plenty to have punters yelling prost! (cheers).

This year the Gold Coast’s Burleigh Brewing has been commissioned to supply the traditional larger, wheat and dark beers for the festival, observing strict Bavarian Purity Laws to ensure the brews are as authentic as possible and taste like they’re straight out of Munich.

While for the first time in the event’s history, alcohol-free beer and cider and gluten-free beers will be sold to cater to more demographics.

In another first, there will be a specialty beer garden – the German Liquor.com Specialty Bier Bar – inside the BierGarten serving 15 brews exclusively imported from Germany just for the celebrations.

Wine, schnapps, German sparkling, cocktails and booze-free options will be available too, ready to wash down a buffet of German culinary delicacies, including schnitzels, pork knuckles and bratwursts.

There will also be a new food offering this year, with a fresh German bakery on board serving sweet treats like custard and Nutella-filled pretzels, pizza pretzels, danishes and strudel.

A new schnitzel vendor will also be at the festival dishing out chicken and veal schnitzels with potatoes, bacon and gravy, and roast pork rolls.

There will also be a variety of other German specialties including the ravioli-like Maultaschen and the gnocchi-esque spaetzle.
