Brisbane Ekka doughnut burger the essence of decadence

Food traditions have been entrenched in the Ekka since its 1870s inception, with cookery competitions and refreshment booths.
In the 1950s the emblematic Ekka fairy floss, butter board sandwiches, Strawberry Sundaes and dagwood dogs were introduced and for 2024 things have been taken up a notch.
For the aesthetically minded, Sunnybank-based speciality dessert makers Cocoart will offer beautiful coconut puddings in coconut bowls.
For those more into gluttony, Gold Coast father and son run business Boom Burger will present their new Doughnut Burger with two beef patties, bacon and cheese between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts to gorge on.
The creators described it as a rule breaker, but for Lulu and Billy Cotter while the temptation to taste the creative burger was strong, their mother Regina said they would be more inclined to get into the traditional Ekka sweets.
“They would have loved to have tried it, they love the sweets, you know, the fairy floss, the lollipops, the strawberry sundaes, but maybe the burger might have been too much of a challenge for them,” she said.
With two parents from country Queensland Lulu and Billy have had a love for the Ekka instilled in them with Regina from Chinchilla and her husband John from Goomeri.
“He started his involvement with the Ekka just after school stewarding with the cattle, he’s been involved for a really long time and then of course that’s passed on to our four children who look forward to it every year it’s a highlight,” said Regina.
