The Cairns region is beautiful … but it can be expensive if you don’t plan ahead. We explored the region in the MG ZS EV. After charging the vehicle with the MG ChargeHub at the Hilton Cairns, we were able to comfortably reach each destination without worrying about the cost of petrol. We’ve compiled a guide on how to not fall into the tourist trap with five things we tried and pass the affordability test.
Palm Cove
Cost: $0.00
What would an afternoon in paradise look like? Historic buildings along the edge of a marina nestled among trees or a magnificent hilly backdrop adjacent to the beach with lunch options ranging from cold pressed juice to locally caught fish? No matter your preference, Palm Cove ticks all the boxes without costing a cent.
While the beach at Palm Cove may not get as much attention as the Great Barrier Reef, it is one of the best places for a quick weekend getaway. The beach itself is heavily patrolled by lifeguards in the dedicated irukandji protection zone. Families can enjoy an afternoon swimming at the beach, or you can stop into one of the many cafes and restaurants along the waterfront.
Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets
Cost: $0.00
Walking through the rainforest markets feels a little like you’re stepping into an out-of-this-world realm. Little decorated huts are scattered throughout the markets, weaving among the natural topography of the rainforest. All types of artistry are on display in this whimsical merger of nature and human creativity.
Tarot readings, tea and tales of simpler times are on offer from the enthusiastic sellers. While it is free to visit the markets any activities you participate in may have an additional cost. The atmosphere, however, is more than enough to capture the imagination and wonder of any little ones you take to the markets.
Australian Butterfly Sanctuary
Cost: $20.00
If you’re considering a day trip to Kuranda your first stop should be the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. The gift shop is filled with hundreds of unique gifts created by local artists, including framed butterflies, T-shirts and toys for young children. When you first enter the sanctuary it is evident the volunteers absolutely love what they do and will excitedly tell you about how the Cairns birdwing chooses which leaves are perfect to lay eggs on.
There are lots of educational opportunities ranging from the ability to watch a volunteer feed caterpillars, see a magnified butterfly wing or learn about the butterfly life cycle. The environment is kept in pristine condition which is a testament to the passion of the volunteers at the sanctuary. A must-visit.
The Crystal Caves
Cost: $25.00
You might be a little confused when first visiting The Crystal Caves. From the outside it may look like a store selling precious gems however the store is so much more. Tucked away at the back of the store is a pathway into a crystal-studded labyrinth created by adventurer René Boissevain and his wife, Nelleke Boissevain.
After years spent exploring some of the most phenomenal caves in the world, René took his collection to the Atherton Tablelands. While the cave itself is made of styrofoam, René has created a breathtaking sensory experience inspired by his real-life adventures.
Lake Eacham
Cost: $0.00
Formed from a volcanic crater, Lake Eacham is beloved by tourists. Signs warn that freshwater crocodiles can be sighted at the lake however that doesn’t dissuade tourists from spending all afternoon at Lake Eacham.
Those not looking to swim can opt to walk the circuit track instead and learn about the native flora surrounding the lake. Picnic areas, toilets and barbecue facilities are also available, making Lake Eacham a perfect zero-cost day out.
