A new report published by a global research giant has uncovered the most popular baby names for Australian parents in 2021, with a long-term favourite knocked from top spot.
McCrindle Research’s annual baby names report has shown some interesting trends in the choice of names parents have selected over the past year.
The headline positional change on the top 10 most popular Australian girls names is Isla overtaking Charlotte for top spot.
Charlotte had held the coveted title of Australia’s most popular girls name since 2015, however, 1539 Isla’s being born compared to 1.508 Charlotte’s was enough for the former to take top spot.
Ashley Leighton, mother of two-year-old Charlotte, said she was “actually shocked” by her daughter’s name being beaten in popularity by another.
“I didn’t expect that to happen at all if I am honest,” Ms Leighton said.
“Charlotte’s held top spot for years now.
When asked why she and fiance Tyler Pitts decided on Charlotte for the name of their daughter, Ms Leighton said she loved it.
“I have always thought the name Charlotte sounded gorgeous,” she said.
“Another reason was that name was the only one which Tyler and I agreed on.”
