Queensland is Australia’s ice cream capital and now we’ve found the best frozen confection in the state.
From operations that have won national dairy competitions, to businesses where the staff has attended “gelato university” in Italy, these are the top five ice cream outlets to satisfy a sweet tooth.

GELATO MESSINA
West End, Fortitude Valley, Surfers Paradise
Gelato Messina is renowned for its kooky flavours, high-profile collabs and long queues, but it’s the attention to detail that has made the business shine. It has its own dairy farm to produce the creamy jersey milk that makes the gelato, a hazelnut farm to grow the best nuts, and it makes its chocolate in-house using thehighest quality Ecuadorean cacao.
ANITA GELATO

The Brisbane outlet of the Israeli-born, world-famous gelato shop attracts queues out the door every night of the week for its hand-made ice cream. The operation uses the freshest local ingredients for its more than 150 different kinds of frozen yoghurt, sorbets, organic sugar-free, fat-free, soy-based and real cream-based ice creams in flavours such as Snickers and pavlova.
LA MACELLERIA
Teneriffe, West End, Woolloongabba, Bowen Hills
Born and trained in the craft of gelato-making in Italy, La Macelleria owner Matteo Zini is a gelato purist. He makes his traditional Italian ice creams from scratch each day using fresh fruit and full cream milk and adheres to the strict rule of five to 10 per cent fat content. Flavours include the adored pistachio and stracciatella, plus seasonal specials.

After completing “gelato university” in Italy, owner Yue Lin has made ice cream his life, with his frozen creations winning Best Ice Cream in Australia multiple times in a host of national competitions. Made using local ingredients, flavours include creme brulee and cucumber sorbet.

23 James St, Burleigh Heads
This family owned operation specialises in hand-made, small-batch gelati and sorbet made fresh daily at their Burleigh Heads operation using a mix of top-notch local and1 imported ingredients. This year they took out the national title of Champion Flavoured Ice Cream at the Royal Queensland Food Awards for their miso maple gelato with sesame brittle.
