‘Just made it’: Key piece of Kangaroo Pt green bridge in place

A 25m masthead for one of the city’s biggest infrastructure projects cleared the Story Bridge by just a few metres to be installed in a historic moment on Wednesday.

The key piece of one of the city’s biggest infrastructure projects made quite a spectacle being sailed down the Brisbane River on Tuesday afternoon.

As part of a 95m structure, the piece was delivered by barge and made its way from the Port of Brisbane to Kangaroo Point, but it first had to make its way under one of Brisbane’s iconic landmarks.

Dreary weather did not dull the occasion as the upright masthead passed within a few metres of the Story Bridge.

“The masthead is so tall it is required to travel on a low tide to ensure enough clearance to complete the journey from the Port of Brisbane to Kangaroo Point,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“The fully assembled mast will sit at 95m above the water, higher than the Story Bridge.”

A council spokesman said the masthead cleared the bridge by just metres.

The masthead, known as a ‘pyramidion’ to bridge engineers, will house the cable-stay system of 32 tensioned cables that will support the weight of the bridge deck.

The triangular steel structure is made up of four legs and was manufactured locally using Australian steel by Beenleigh Steel Fabrications.

It was painted at a local business in Carole Park before being transported in two halves and fully assembled at the Port of Brisbane.

“The bridge will not only be a vital connection between the CBD and our suburbs, but a place to stop, relax and eat while taking in stunning views of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and the Brisbane River,” he said.

“It will save people 15 minutes when travelling to the CBD from the eastern suburbs and will provide a new connection to the Gabba for sports and event goers for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

“More than 6100 people are expected walk, ride or scoot across the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge each day, taking 84,000 cars off the Story Bridge every year.”
