Are Aussies financially prepared for this crisis?

You know the world is changing when a 5-star hotel starts advertising pandemic packages, and that’s exactly what’s happening in Brisbane.

Five-star boutique hotel Emporium Hotel South Bank recently launched an offer perfect for anyone looking for a little luxury while they self isolate as a result of the global coronavirus crisis.

“When it comes to self-isolating, how do picturesque river views, open-air balconies, free WI-FI and meals delivered direct to your door sound?” the Emporium website asks.

This is what the Isolation Package, starting at $175 per night and valid until May 31, offers.

For an extra $50 per person/per day, you get breakfast, lunch and dinner delivered to your suite.

So what’s on the menu? For breakfast guests can select from free range eggs, an Acai bowl, and eggs Benedict and lunch includes pumpkin soup, confit duck terrine or an Emporium club sandwich.

Dinner includes grilled fillet of ocean trout, beef cheek ragu or pumpkin and truffle risotto. “In addition to this, whether guests book the meal package or not, all guests at the hotel still have access to the full in-suite dining menu throughout their stay,” Mr Martin said.

For $75 per person/per day add unlimited in-suite movie and an “entertainment pack” with drinks and snacks replenished daily.

Emporium general manager Charles Martin said the package provided “a place of hibernation for people during this time of uncertainty”.

“(They) have been developed in response to an increase in demand for dependable access to amenities and essential services,” Mr Martin told Brisbane News.

He said they were specifically designed to cater to the elderly who no longer wished to interact in public or who relied on others for meals, groceries and other daily needs;

people who must continue to go to work and remain isolated from their other household residents; and people who wish to have ready access to accommodation, food and sanitation products.

Mr Martin said it was “never an option” for Emporium to shut its doors nor volunteer to become a quarantine hotel for returned travellers or possible COVID-19 cases.

“It has been critical to pivot our business plan and adapt rapidly to the changing environment,” he said.
