10. Spotted Cod
Shop 5, 159 Hamilton Rd, Wavell Heights
A favourite for those looking for fresh Australian seafood, and non-traditional menu items. Run by Doug McGarry for four and a half years, this fish and chip joint does everything from fresh salads of the week, burgers and even hot dogs. The shop also sells a variety of New Zealand brand products like Wattie’s tomato sauce.

9. Perch’d
1/252 Cavendish Rd, Coorparoo
Owned and run by young couple Jennie Byrnes and Patrick Laws, Perch’d is inspired by the hearty food the couple ate while travelling Europe, with a staple menu that changes weekly according to what can be sourced from the local fishmonger. They are known for their hand-cut potato chips, and British-style sides like their house-made mushy peas and curry sauce.

8. Steve’s Fish and Chips
8-14 Rothbury St, Bald Hills
This humble, family-run shop prides itself on nailing the basics. Owned and run by Steve and Debbie Moss and their daughter Kelsey for seven years, they are known for cooking everything out the front where their customers can see, and being the friendliest fish and chip shop in town. Signature menu items include handmade potato scallops and deep fried Mars bars.

7. The Fishmonger’s Wife
48 Orchard St, Hawthorne
The Fishmonger’s Wife specialises in its wide range of fresh, and sometimes unusual, fish. Some highlights include; Tahitian snapper, Northern Territory barramundi and teriyaki salmon. Owners Sue and Steve Meadowcroft have had fish and chip shops in the area for 17 years, and make all of their sauces and sides in house. They offer plenty of gluten-free options.

6 The Barra Boys
1007 Stanley St East, East Brisbane
Run by father and son duo Stace and Nick Marvis, The Barra Boys put their 20 years of experience working together in hospitality to good use with this fish and chip shop. Their daily catch of fish can be battered, crumbed or grilled or bought fresh by the kilo. Or try something different with their halloumi burger or sweet potato fries.

5. Clayfield Seafood Markets

Specialising in fresh and sustainably caught seafood, Clayfield Seafood Markets provides Brisbane’s northside with a quality fishmonger. As well as traditional fish and chips and old-school items like potato scallops and Chiko Rolls, there are dishes such as a grilled salmon burger, and falafel burger for the vegetarians. Owner George Tselepis has been serving locals his fish and chips for 28 years. In fact, he says he has served some local families for three generations. And, what keeps them coming back? The fact that he knows his customers by name and, of course, his famous “fish dinners”, which include a fillet of fish, beer-battered chips, homemade salad and homemade tartare sauce.

The mantra of siblings-in-law owners Vanessa Leventis and Leo Andronitos is “if we wouldn’t serve it to our family, we won’t serve it to anyone”. Their fish and chip shop is known for its friendly service and great-value lunch deals, including the cod, chips, drink deal for $9.90. 3 Sandgate Fishmonger

There’s a lot to love about this northside gem, but its location across the road from Sandgate beach is hard to beat. Locals and visitors come for the spectacular view, and stay for the cracking fish and chips and a gelato bar. The menu features a variety of fresh seafood, burgers and salads. Plus they have gluten-free batter.

Sea Fuel is owned and managed by brothers Andrew and Fotis Skordou, who pride themselves on serving local, sustainable fish to Brisbane’s inner-city region. Customers can choose from a
range of fish, prawns, oysters and even octopus — all sourced from Australia and New Zealand. Sea Fuel is fully licenced too, so why not grab a glass of champagne, beer or whiskey while you’re there.

With a name that pays homage to the Beatles recording studio, Yabbey Road is the ultimate destination for lovers of classic fish and chips and classic rock ’n’ roll. The shop is decked out with Beatles memorabilia, including a John Lennon cutout and even an “Abbey Road” crossing on the front footpath. Alan and Kathy Bray have been going strong in their waterside location for four years, and their homemade mushy peas are a favourite with British expats.
