'Best makeover yet': Aussie couple transform kitchen with $10 Kmart buy

DIY enthusiasts are loving this easy-to-replicate benchtop makeover.

The Thompsons have been slowly renovating their retro home this year and turning it into a luxe oasis on a budget.

So far they've transformed their kids' rooms, dining room, lounge room, bathrooms, laundry, and bedroom and are now close to the finish line. 

One of their final projects was updating their 70's green kitchen with green laminate benchtops.

With the help of some white paint and Kmart's $10 Decor and Furniture Paint Chips, they turned it into a bright and minimalistic space with terrazzo-look counters.

The transformation is so dramatic (and looks seemingly easy to replicate) that people on social media have deemed it "the best makeover yet."

"This bench was a major change for the space"

Taking to their Instagram page, @themissouriproject, where they've been documenting their DIY home renovation, The Thompsons showed their followers how they revamped the kitchen benchtops. 

"This bench was a major change for the space," they said at the start of the clip, before getting into the details of the cost-effective upgrade. 

"We started off by giving it a really good sand and roughing up the surface a little bit and then cleaning up the excess mess."

They used the Dulux renovation range and added two coats of primer, leaving eight hours between each coat. 

Next, they added four coats of white paint to fully cover up the green and then sprinkled the Kmart paint chips on while it was still wet. 

They then topped it off with three coats of gloss.

"The best makeover yet"

DIY enthusiasts couldn't get enough of the makeover, taking to the comments to praise the couple, who describe themselves as "rookies learning as we go."

"This turned out brilliant! We have been tossing up whether to paint our kitchen. It's so good to see the power and potential of paint! It really transforms a space so nicely. I love it," one fan commented.

Another wrote: "This is the best makeover yet I've seen with a bench top (and those Kmart chips). Well done, you must be so pleased!" someone else wrote. 

And a third said: "Get the heck outta here. This looks amazing! I need to do this. Thank goodness I stumbled across your account."

"Such a difference, love! 😍" posted a different woman, and another concluded: "This is fabulous and must have been much cheaper than getting new benchtops or getting a company to replace them. Congrats guys!"
