Gladiator sandals are, no doubt, one of the most controversial trends of the 2010s.

Maximalist yet practical at the same time, there’s no shock why they’re so divisive.

And yet, along with all the other ‘80s, ‘90s and noughties trends that have made a comeback this year, we’re set to see a lot more of them this summer.

They’re baaaaack!

It’s official: gladiator sandals are making a comeback.

The shoes have ancient origins, once loved for their ability to offer protection, and as a marker of status.

Over time, though, they became more famous for their presence at Coachella in 2014 - a practical and comfortable yet stylish shoe, able to act as a feature piece when paired with a short short, or as an accessory under a flowing boho midi skirt.

Along with many trends of the 2010s, the gladiator sandal eventually became nothing more than a relic.

However, Gen Z is ensuring they have the comeback they - may or may not - deserve.

“What in the 2014”

While we were busy rugging up and battling torrential rain in winter, up in the northern hemisphere, gladiator sandals began to make their mark.

Content creator Izzi shared a video wearing them to her 1.7 million followers in July.

Many commenters loved the look.

“These are like the DREAM gladiators,” one commenter complimented.

“Omg those shoes are awesome!!!” another agreed.

But, for others, it was an unwelcome blast from the past.

“What in the 2014,” said one person.

“I can’t believe these are coming back,” another said.

“Are gladiator sandals coming back? I should’ve kept the ones I had,” a third joked.

Are you here for it?

Now that it’s finally hit summer here, it seems Aussies are getting on board.

Retailers like Charles & Keith, Dazie and ASOS are all selling variations of gladiator sandals.

We’re also seeing different variations of gladiator sandals make it to retailers, including gladiator heels, and platform versions.

But, the real question is - will you be getting on board this time around?
